Okay, so some reasons why I think this is possibly a bit more valuable than the London event of the same name, since one or two people have asked on the other thread.
It's in response to a specific series of events, it's much more focussed and has a better chance of getting a high level of relatively sympathetic publicity due to the existing media coverage.
I know that the organisers are making real efforts to consult prostitutes in Ipswich and find out how they feel about this.
I'm going to have to say it at some point. This isn't a women only event, which I feel is possibly a bit better for something like this, though I'm happy to be proven wrong.
It's not like I really have it in for London Reclaim the Night, if you read the thread from the start, I just wanted to raise a few issues I had with the political arguments given on the website for the event.
I support your action - I tend to support all actions. But do you think these murders are "exactly the sort of thing" RTN is figthing against?
This serial killer is mentally unstabel (to put it mildly), and why deranged men sometimes kill prostitutes is not something I can claim to udnerstand, but I am quite certain it is resulting from a mental disease/disorder.
We certainly need better mental health services in Britain (although we have much better NHS services than most countries, if not all countries). Topicaly enough, a report realesed last week claimed that 400 murders have been commited by known care-in-the-community patients in the last 8 years: http://www.inthenews.co.uk/news/news-channels/headline-channel/report-exposes-mental-health-murders-$459943.htm
The actual figure is probably higher, as not all mental health sufferers are recognised as such - particularly true in our overcrowded prisons.
edited to add: you RTN action may well have a positive effect for the women of Ipswich who must be feeling very scared to go out at night - and as I say, I support that.
what about community safety/organisation? that not worthy enough for you?
anyway, i think it's a good idea. i'd like to go, but i doubt i can afford to. i do have some reservations about "publicity", given that the town's already had more than enough of it.
