iPods: Crap/ Not Crap?

I absolutely hate "Ipods"

They are just MP3 players that force you into using a horrible interface in which to transfer songs (Itunes)

Sony are way better as you can drag and drop like you should be able to on a usb device. Fuck even my kids £20 cheapo sounded as good as my Shuffle and you had the added benefit of drag and dropping files rather than installing the horrible itunes.

Hate the things and imo white looks shit.

Sure, it's not supposed to be a PDA, it's a communication device, but the question is - why _not_ try a bit harder? Why have miserable PIM software? It's not hard to do.
Exactly.

It's got a keyboard. It surfs the web. It connects to the web. It syncs with a Mac. It's got an address book and it lets you put stuff on it.

So why not include some half-decent software to let people do basic things like to-dos, notes and calendars? It can't be that much extra effort and would improve its usefulness no end.

I love mine for the reasons you hate it. Ah well.

You can add items to the calendar and it will sync back... Been there since a firmware update...

Can you add categories, customised icons, projects, to-dos and reminders to calendar dates? Can it sync with a multitude of desktop software programs? Is it a sophisticated calendar app like those seen on other platforms?

Perhaps you missed the "half decent" part of my earlier comment?

Well... Its not a pda, is it...? Its been designed primarily as a media player. Perhaps when the SDK comes out someone will write a nice suite of PDA apps for it.

And why didn't Apple give it a full suite of pda apps already...? Because they have the iPhone and (possibly) a soon to be released small-form laptop for this function.

Sorry am I lost? I thought this was an MP3 player thread and yet people are on about PDA's.

If you want a PDA go buy a PDA. If you want a music player an iPod touch is a lovely gadget.

I myself have gone for the iPhone. Its an iPod touch with only 8GB of memory. But thats all i need. The bonus is it makes calls, has a calender, notes, email and web browser.

the thing is, half the stuff i download has shit tags, and I can't be bothered sorting them out. Folders and file names mean I don't have to
You could use Tag and Rename to set the tags based on the filename.

I don't understand the purpose of the iPod Touch. It's not a phone, it's a poor PDA, and its admittedly excellent interface is almost entirely pointless for music, and near pointless for video. Wifi redeems it a little but only in the absence of wifi mobile phones.

I wouldn't buy an iPod if I could avoid it (I'd love a new iRiver H3XX or equivalent but it's long gone) for its lack of proper MTP, lack of file/folder navigation as a result, poor equalizer, and massive proprietary hangover.

I like my iAudio but there's no way of ordering the files (there probably is actually, I just can't be arse to work it out) - you just have to scroll through them - of course I don't help matters by forgetting to give them meaningful tags - so I have to listen to a file called rh_313_10-31-07 to find out what is is

Well, there's a calendar built into the thing and that generally suggests PDA aspirations.

As I understand it, there's simply no database on it, so you can't e.g. go 'oh I want this artist' and play all their stuff.

If you get the folder structure right, no problem, i.e.:

M:\James Brown\The Payback\08 - Mind Power.mp3

I was well pissed off about the lack of this on the iRiver - it does actually exist but it's shite - but I quickly found that with music tagged properly, it's no problem at all. Better if you've got albums (or can make albums) instead of just random tracks though. Use Tag & Rename to do the tagging, dead easy.

Jailbreaking transforms them, you can put whatever application you like on.;)
The trouble with this is it relies on a security vulnerability - so if you ever get a software update, none of your apps work, and if the app gets updated, it'll have to use a different vulnerability. It's a pretty poor situation.

Until the official SDK is released, it's the only way :(
And that lack of official support for 3rd party apps is another very good reason not to get an iphone or ipod touch, if you want to use it for anything but the core capability.

Latest update 1.1.2 doesnt break the jailbreak.

So yes, I ummed and aahed; I dallied and I dillied and I dithered; and then I thought to myself, "yes, I know what I'll do - I'll buy her a Toyota overlocker."

And do you know what? That's exactly what I did.
