just a quick question, i dont have a mp3 player, i use my SE mobile phone to play my mp3s, if i where to get an ipod would i NEED to install itunes to load music from my comp to the ipod or could i jsut drag and drop from mp3 directory to the mp3 player?

You would need to use iTunes... iTunes makes dealing with more than a dozen mp3 files a lot easier. (Unless you a fully paid up geek who has written his/her music organising software)

Your laptop is fine for running iTunes. I’d go for an iPod too; you don’t need the hassle of anything complicated if all you want is music. Be warned, the headphones are crap and you’ll need to buy a decent pair if you really want to enjoy your music…

Also get a new pair if you don't want to look like an easily muggable sheep.

No, ipod needs itunes (or a 3rd party equivalent)

You have to stop thinking about MP3 files and start thinking about your music library for it all to make sense. I don't know where my MP3 files are, and it doesn't matter. (alright, I do, but it still wouldn't matter :))

Which is precisely why i don't like i tunes. :p

Just let go, dub. Everything will be all right :) I understand you mindset - I used to feel the same way. I used to want to know the whereabouts of every file. But it doesn't matter. It really doesn;t. Walk towards the light with me.

i burn CDs constantly, i fill DVDs with mp3s constantly etc etc.

All of this is done much more easily through a simple drag n drop windows interface than it is titting around with i-tunes.

Back in the DOS vs. Mac days I used to have odd phone conversations with Mac people trying to explain how to physically get their files onto floppy disks and stuff.

Personally, I have a bottomless pit filing system and windows_find ...

One day in the dim distant future I will cross-index all my music by mood, genre and moonphase .....

"my documents" is now a 250 gig drive in a USB caddy.

You know you can burn data disks straight from itunes, right? And it's much easier to track down tunes in itunes than explorer (now which compilation was that remix on? I can't remember... just search) - just drag and drop to make a playlist and hit the Burn button.

Anyway, I won't push it too hard, because I know that having strong convictions challenged can be painful. I'll let you come to the Truth in your own time. Blessings on you :)

The iPod works, and it's a piece of piss to use - as I said, unless you're making some kind of consumer point, or have a genuine need to use something different (recording function for example) why bother with anything else?

Because they're better?

I'd go with Creative offerings. Better sound, more features, more bang for your buck.

As an aside: fuck iTunes for destroying my carefully oganised library of mp3s, fuck it over and again :(

And ipods look shit after a couple o weeks due to scratching. I like the black 60GB ones, the only one I'd be tempted by. I'd go for a Cowon at that end of the market though. Persuaded my boss to buy one; they're lush.

(for information only, not propaganda)

iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > General

Check the box marked

-------
Keep iTunes Music Organized

Places song files into album and artist folders, and names the files based on the disc number, track number and song title.

-------

and check

Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library

thus leaving any other files you already have intact.

I don't know if these are the defaults but I don't recall messing with them.

Works well enough for my 67GB of music.
