Well, knock me down with a feather, after wasting bloody hours on this contraption, it was as simple as removing iTunes and reinstalling it. Seems to be working now. Go figure.

I've got one, and it works fine, if that's any consolation.

That took ages to charge the first time though (under-powered USB port as Crispy mentions).

Right, so I got it working and I actually quite like it now. But, the sound quality is poor, really crackly

I think it might be the headphones which are just the standard white ones which came with it. Are these known for being crap? Are there any (not too expensive) ones that I could buy that would improve things?

all bundled headphones with almost anything are crap. spend around 30 quid for a decent pair of in-ear buds. Try some out first though, to make sure the crackle's coming form the headphones and not the socket.
