iPod nano

Nah, don't like the look of that at all. The buttons are crap and it looks like a shiny soap (though the embedded screen seems quite nice). It's not up to Sony's usual standards.

Yeah I know someone who has another Sony MP3 and I picked it up to use and was still fiddling around with it about a minute later trying to get the damn thing to play a tune! I use my iPod most on the tube to work, to get me to buy another (when it dies on me) the MP3 player needs to be able to find a tune/album in under ten seconds... :o

yeah the old sonys where a pain, this one has agot a new search function aparently, you can even do a year search, something you cant do on a n ipod...i think

That's grimmer in those shots than I first imagined. Sony's design department have seemed to revert to a an unholy combination of Fisher Price aesthetics with shiny 80s Dyson style colours. Yuk. And there's nothing as intuitive looking about those controls either.

Maybe this is one for the Japanese market and there'll be some European models though. I can't see this current model giving Apple much to worry about, especially with new ipods on their way soon.

Hmmm, I can't see a need for searching by year tbh, what I need is artist or album (hell I don't even use the genre search) search really.

lol...a little harsh feel, anyway i loved fisher price stufff.....
trannau would you preffer it in white and blue????
i think its cool, it looks completely different to the ipod, and had to really otherwise it was going to get the 'its a copy' brigade on its back.

the ipod although a good design not exatly adventourus

Yep but then I like simple and elegant.

The big problem Sony has if you ask me is they look desperate, every three months they launch yet another line of MP3 players all aimed at being iPod killers. They have no strategy other than just churn them out. Look at the iPod family and you can see a very coherent theme and strategy at play. Look at the Sony range and they all look different, odd, fiddly etc. If they came up with a nice design and came up with variations along that theme accross varying price points and stuck to it for longer than six months they might have a winner on their hands...

Mine died. It was quick and painless though, although his little empty docking station next to my computer is a constant reminder of the pain.

It's not the colour really, more the desperation and lack of consistency of Sony's random design department that grates.

The original Walkman from Sony succeeded because they were simple, intuitive and iconic, with the ipod achieving much the same status in the market now. These new Sony efforts are muddled and dated looking in comparison - hotch potches that are neither fish nor shiny foul.

Which is strange for Sony, which traditionally has had understated, minimal lines on its products. I always associate tacky colours and forced 'funky' designs with its competitors like Philips and JVC in the bad old days.

Is Sony getting a little desperate after too many fuck-ups of late?

Sony really is looking more and more desperate with every release...

I'm not seeing your point. They're both everyday computer interfaces that aren't particularly alike to my eyes. They could be any one of a hundred programs.

But judging by those two screen grabs, I'd say that the Sony looks a bit better.

The look and functionality of the iPod is something to marvel at and has been its major selling point since day one. Not a single competing gadget has come close to it on either and its on this battle ground that they have to compete. That spinny wheel thing is the perfect way of selecting tracks and general use. I actually prefered the mechanical one, it was nicer to use.

Its gonna take a genius to beat that. Its like coming up with a new type of door or tap that looks totally different but works just as easily as the original.

A much underused phrase imo. :D

Class isn't it?

Apple has two divisions really... the computer hardware/software and the iPod.

It's grown to match that, I wouldn't say there is any less focus on Apple wanting to create the best computers in the world.

That sony looks amazing, but I will refuse to get it if it doesn't work as a standard USB mass storage device. And it definitely won't support OGG, so that's another pain in the ass.

Features I want from a player:
Easy to use
Excellent sound quality
Radio
OGG support
USB hard drive support

Wrap that up in a beautiful shiny package, and I'll buy it. Until then, I'll have to stick to my CD player.

Why someone wants ogg support is beyond me. Seriously... I've tried to download oggs but you just don't find them like you do mp3s...

As for radio - primmie :p

More interested in ease of us above anything - which means the software and the hardware... all the inbetween bits.

Anyway, I like the nano - but am happy with my current Mini. I expect the nano will progress in the future and then I'll move that way.

Sony always fuck up because they force drm to be used. Apple's drm is a sticker saying "Don't steal music". (Yes, Apple does put drm on the iTunes store but getting around is simple...)

Wait until you use it. Knowing Sony software it'll want you to re-encode your songs to a Sony format (which will change in the next version). And then it'll crash halfway through the transfer and force you to start over.

Maybe the person holding it just has really, really big hands.

It's actually just a full size iPod.

I watched the show they put on... And it's TINY!
Steve Jobs took one out of his jeans pockets... You know the little pocket that no-one knows what it's for inside the big pocket? Yeah. That.

(I keep small change in mine)

The sound quality of OGG is a fair bit better than MP3 at 128kbps. I've got quite a bit of music in OGG format. Far more than I have in AAC.

Now get back under your rock :p

You and who else? As I said, bugger all of it to download compared to mp3.

And it's a portable player, quality of output matters only a tiny bit. Your headphones will make a significant amount of impact (especially if you get noise cancelling and all).

Get back to your geekdom :p
