iphone announced tomorrow?

maybe the iphone might just be ready and affordable by the time I've had my year or 18 months on tmobile with my treo 650

worried about battery life...keyboard useability...and of course it would be worthless on anything other than a free data contract

I reckon the screen's going to be the biggest issue with this. You're not going to want to just slip it in your pocket with your keys...

So you'll end up with people walking around with flip-cases that look like a paperback being held to their ear when making calls.

Still - the Safari browser looks brilliant in principle - full size web pages that you can easily zoom in and out on - great stuff.

Mind you, it wouldn't be difficult to trounce Windows Mobile 5 - possibly the worst implementation of any operating system I've had the misfortune to struggle with. - Gave up on my expensive Ipaq after about a month. Piece of shite! (Yeah, should have known etc etc).

Also, but most importantly - running OSX it'll bring a hell of a lot of people their first experience of the mac operating system, with resulting sales for macs.

I don't think it'll be much a problem, they'll probably just release a slip clip on pocket thingy for it (similar to what Blackberries have)...

Stupid phone conversations aside that iPhone websection makes this look like one temping device indeed. I wonder how it will interact with Apple TV?

Sorry but I fucking hate Quicktime. Three crashes, three error messages and endless fucking about. And then the installer tries to grab all the file defaults.

And now the cunting piece of shit is insisting that I have to restart the entire fucking system.

Quicktime Alternative has always done the job for me.

Is it me or is the apple TV a serriously shit product?

Video formats supported: H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store); up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480, 30 fps,

That's barely enough to manage normal TV, let alone high definition. They don't even say what processor you get! Yet another really disapointing box.

Well. Mm. Looks interesting. I see that they've decided to go with widgets as the software option, which makes sense if they've put Safari on it - for those who don't know OS X, widgets are little HTML and Javascript things with a few extra classes and methods, which can do a whole load of shit and are also very easy to write. On the other hand I wouldn't expect that everything which was possible with OS X widgets was possible on the phone (I'm doubting there's Flash for instance).

That battery life isn't that hot. No standby time listed, and using it as a player or browser will eat into the talk time like nobody's business.

I can't believe there are enough people out there who think downloaded movies and TV shows off itunes are good value for money :(

The Apple TV is rubbish, let's not bother even talking about that. Oooh, a new way to get ripped off online!

most people in the apple tv demographic probably have macs with dvd burners, so any downloaded movies could be watched for a fraction of the price and slightly less convenience, shirley...

iphone looks juicy though. a phone running os x is the kind of gadget ive id be willing to spend money on. apple havent announced anything exciting in a while, this is what the mac geeks have been begging for.

I'm pleased in away that the iphone isn't available to Europe until end of the year... I would buy one straight away if I could... but it means by then hopefully, all issues will be ironed-out with a rev2 or 3 version, longer battery life, bigger memory and cheaper price..

ooo this is the phone i tested a few months back wonder if they have sorted out any of the issues i had with it (namely that it was runnign on moblie 5 from windows as the base system... and that the snap on keyboard was to flimsey...) have to say though the test version the little joystick stuck out toomuch and seemed to be very easy for it to get caught up in your pocket the case seemed to easliy scracthed...

Onscreen keyboards are utterly *horrible.*

They feel rubbish, they're not tactile, they get dirty and smudged in seconds and are a really horrible way to input text.

We've got one of those smartypants remote controls with a LCD screen for buttons and I'll never get one again. Give me a *proper* button I can bash any day!

*editor tries again on new machine.
*editor gets a "you need to download software to view this but the software is not available on the server* Quicktime message.

Apple really are a bunch of useless cunts.

Well... It means they know have a vertical integrated network based video-on-demand system. Pretty impressive 'cos its probably one the few around...

It also means you won't have to spend all your time burning DVD's...

And I'm guessing someone will have linux running on it with a week of the first unit being shipped...

Um... Did you skip the bit about the touch sensitive screen and it not having a stylus...?

Enough now.

I'm quite impressed, I thought it was Flash running the demos but it's Quicktime.
Running in Firefox for me no probs.

Wonderful as a business achievement I'm sure, but the current concept of video-on-demand is a huge step backwards for actual consumers; it's far too led by the media corps. I'd rather watch tiny scratchy videos on YouTube than pay ridiculous sums for DRMed crap.

The iPhone looks very impressive - lets wait & see what the bugs are though. Apple TV just looks rubbish - I really can't see quite what the point of it is.

Nothing.
He's just got a 'thing' about Apple.
Give it a rest eh, ed.
;)

Good point.

You would...? Personally I would rather watch nicely plotted programmes with good production values on a tv, rather than "tiny scratchy videos"... I'm pretty sure the ones from the iTunes (they're gonna have to rename that) store will have DRM... ;)

They've been selling movies and tv shows through itunes for a year now in the states, and it's doing good business.
