International Breaks Suck Cock.

Can I take this opportunity to post up Luka Modric's quite valiant effort to remind us all of how Eastern European footballers should look courtesy of the granuiad:

eh, quite a bit different as any glance at history would tell you, particularly in the case of Northern Ireland and as for England well I don't hear 'No Surrender to the IRA', "Rule Britannia" and other delightfully reactionary ditties being sang by most club sides.

Sure nationalism can exist with clubs too, like Celtic or Rangers, but then I wouldn't choose to be stood amongst those muppets either.

Well granted, Northern Ireland does have its own history that generates its own brand of rivalries, but they are not unique, just more intense. They still manifest themselves in the 'English' Leagues, just in different ways . Like i said, following a Welsh team I hear reactionay nationalist ditties being sung week in week out, from both sets of fans.

And whilst "fight, fight, where ever you may be, we fucking hate the west country", may not strictly be 'nationalist', it comes from the same small minded geographical supremacist mindset as nationalism. And people wanting to kick the living daylights out of eachother becasue they come from a different part of London .... is that not patriotism on a micro scale?

Why is it so terrible when England fans sing God Save The Queen for heaven's sake? It's the national anthem!

I've never been a fan of the anthem choice, but don't see why us english people shouldn't be allowed to sing it either....

Anyhow, anyone see that terrible ref decision giving us a penalty?:D

I mean, it's the national anthem of a country which is relatively peaceful, well run, uncorrupt, in which lots of people have come and settled and made good lives for themselves. Why should we feel ashamed of it other than that it's a bit daft singing about the queen rather than the people as a whole? Nevertheless it is our anthem, the way some people talk about it you'd think it was a Skrewdriver song or something.

Just called into a mates house for a coffe and it was on the telly, i was only half watching/half talking to his wife. I was very confused about England being awarded a penalty when Rooney brought one of the opposition down

It is sad, I dont like Beckham but it has to be said he is a gifted footballer. His skill outshines everything else.

Rooney is a gifted footballer, but that is completely overshadowed by the fact that he is a cheating thugish moraonic twat.

Has anyone complained about it in this thread? if they have i have missed it.

Well Revol mentioned Rule Britannia which is the closing song for one of the UK's main national events for heaven's sake.

And I remember at other times when England fans were chastised for 'singing God Save The Queen'.

Putting club first isn't exclusive to the 'Big Four' as it goes - a lot of West Ham fans don't care much for England at all these days, although I think that's mostly because of feeling a bit gutted about the number of ex West Ham players in the squad...

and the fact that we got relegated partly for having james out because of an injury sustained on england duty & ashton.

All valid reasons but bollocks to it, i like england.

I've watched Defoe for years, even had a season ticket during his first spell at WHL. Same every time; second-rate opposition, a flick to the right, gain half a second, right-footed shot. The pundits love him.

Put him up against a top 4 defender who knows his one trick, he's fucked.

Like in the last couple of mins of the game when the defender stood up to him and sent him down the left, he had nothing.

Still its quite likely in a game that he will get a chance to take one touch and fire with his right and its quite likely that he will score from it, especially in the from he is in at the moment.

And to be honest how many teams actually have very good defenders? don't play him against italy, germany or france and thats about it!

dave

The point is he will always face top quality defenders in the last 4, maybe the last 8, of international tournaments.

not really!

spain, brazil, argentina, portugal could all be opponents in the latter rounds. If some of them make it. And none of those have two top quality centre backs.

I do think defoe needs his starting games picked and chosen for him though and think he may be more effective as a game changing sub against certain teams. I basically agree with you!

spain and brazil don't have top quality centre backs? :D

Anyway, it's currently Cyprus 1 -1 Ireland

who is a world class centre back playing for spain or brazil then?

puygol is the best of the bunch and i really doubt he would make any top 10 centre backs in the world list and anyway i said TWO, pique ain't great.

Same with brazil, lucio is good but again who partners him? Im fairly sure defoe is good enough to play on the weaker one especially if rooney is on the pitch and taking the better defender.

These things can take on a whole new meaning in northern ireland though, i can imagine followers of a loyalist club sining Rule Britania when playing a republican club it could start a riot. My guess is this would also casue problems following the international side.

Rule Britannia is a jingoist song of a fucking empire responsible for more violence and oppression than even the lovely NSDAP could muster in their day.

God Save the Queen is a song that appeals to a non existent entity to grant our masters reign over us, if you can't see the problem with that maybe you need to think a bit more about politics.

Nah even loyalists here don't sing Rule Britannia, they generally define themselves in reaction to Irish nationalism not in celebration of the British Empire per se.

Rule Britannia is to me much more offensive than most loyalist songs, after all for all the blood on loyalist paramilitary hands they aren't close to the sins carried out throughout the world under the Butcher's apron.

OK, I'll give you that one

But it's the national anthem of a country which, for the most part, supports the monarchy. That's the situation. I bet you don't say it's a disgrace when the Dutch sing their one or whatever.

And quite frankly I get a bit sick of our fans being bitter towards ex players. You can only bear so many grudges before it starts getting ridiculous.

I think we should leave that sort of immaturity to the Spuds ;)

Hmm. I think there's something a bit more to his game now. He's genuinely looking an England player.

Puyol, Pique, Marchena, Albiol for Spain

Lucio, Luisao, Alex for Brazil.

alex and pique are world class defenders? you and me have very different definiations of world class/top quality then!
