Intelligent Musicians

Thinking about it more I'd say that Marshall Mathers III is pretty fucking smart... Maybe.
Maybe...as long as he refrains from the homophobia and making hilarious 'jokes' in interviews about raping twelve-year-old girls. 'Cause that ain't too fucking smart.

chuck d is an interesting one, his book 'fight the power - rap, race, and reality' was one of the first political books i read - although he unsurprisingly concentrates on the race angle a bit too much, some real nuggets of political and class analysis shine through. it really helped me to clarify what i was thinking at the time

shaun ryder is fairly smart as well, though obviously not in an acadmic way, and kris kristofferson was a rhodes scholar and has all sorts of letters after his name i think.

neil tennant always strikes me as a bit of an intellectual...

patti smith, and laurie anderson... the girls seem pretty under-represented so far.

will oldham always struck me as a brainbox.

If you want to start a thread about drummers be my guest...

do i look firking dumb? ;)

besides, 'intelligent musicians' is the thin end of the wedge, next it'll be 'oooh, women should get the vote!', and then where will we be?

oh and lets not forget buckeroo banzai - international rock star, brain surgeon, martial artist, rocket scientist, physicist, and interdimensional explorer

Goes though rock at high speed as well...

(there IS a joke in there, i assure you)

Gram Parsons went to Harvard, didn't he, though I think it was daddy's money that got him there.

Lots of bright, articulate musicians around.

not sure about them being academics - intellectuals to some extent undoubtedly (especially the Can geezers), but I didn't think they were like proper big forehead types.

I completely agree actually..maybe were talking 'intellectual' or 'academic' more obviously than 'intelligent'...?
trust me, "academic" doesn't necessarily equal "intelligence"...(!)

So what? People can reply on the basis of their own definitions of what counts as intelligence to them if they like-that's half the point, or didn' you actually go to uni? If to them it means academic qualifications, so be it.

Yeah, but thats my fucking point.

Heh. I hate trying to have arguments/conversations on message boards. I don't know why I even try....

For your info: Guitarist. And I've got a 2:1 from Cambridge. Which should make me (according to this thread at least) the most intelligent musican of them all - right? right?

:p

Chuck Berry: best lyricist ever, and wrote his own autobiography, which is really good. Bit of a weirdo though.
