Intel Mac users can now run XP -officially!

OS X on a Sony Vaio. That would be  I wonder how doable it is now...? Interestingly, last year I saw one of the Viaos with a builtin camera in the screen bezel. I was wondering then why Apple didn't copy iy...
The Palm OS/Sony Clies were fabulous machines and there was some real innovation going on.

Sony's departure from Palm was a real blow. Thank fuck the superb Treo 650 has (rightfully) proved to be such a massive hit!

But I can't see you guys (or for that matter, this discussion) finding much in the way of common ground, it's already too polarised.

Besides, now that jaed has been shorn of his traditional enemy, tom k&e, whither would he turn? :D

Dunno... If Microsoft stopped thinking of security as a "feature" and made it an intergral part of the os then I'd be happy. (Its nice getting a free dinner, bottle of wine when I remove adware/virus infestations but I do have more useful things to do with my time...).

Was Mr K&E an enemy...? Perhaps if you think of rabbits being enemies of Panther :D

Sony can do good things when they put their minds to it. Pity they then usually go and screw it up. (Not letting homebrew/unoffical applications on the PSP)

You're far too confident for me to take the mickey out of in a satisfactory manner, Mr Coder.

:p

It seems an odd way to go about it: here, pay for an expensive machine that already costs more than a comparable PC, and then pay for an expensive XP licence on top of that, mess about installing it and then faff about rebooting into different operating systems all the time.

Been thinking about the money MS might make from this and I’m not sure how big a pool it will be. The last two PCs I’ve bought came with XP discs for a reformat so if I bought a Mac I wouldn’t have to buy XP just load it straight from one of those. Also a couple mates who bought PCs got disks and those that built their own machines typically never pay for XP anyway (using “evaluation” copies…).

Not sure how many people those two instances apply to but it is one less barrier for the likes of me on that front.

Though price was the last barrier it’s been joined by the article above about games. There’s no way in hell I’m paying more than I need to for a worse gaming experience than my current (okish) set up!

Well, to be fair, the imac is just a laptop in a bigger box. Just wait for the intel powermacs. those things should be smokin' :) (and ££££)

The Treo 700w isn't a good sign though.
The death of Psion as a PDA company was preceded by them launching a Windows CE version of their Netbook.

Back to the Wintel Mac though, given that the "run Windows on a Mac" information was out in the wild already, they had nothing to lose by releasing their own version.

As a user, a much more interesting and useful solution is the previously mentioned virtualisation through things like Parallels Workstation. Using that, it takes half the time to install XP (20 mins versus 40 mins with Boot Camp) and XP then boots in 8 seconds from a virtual machine reset.

VMware have already mentioned that they have their virtualisation software running on Intel Macs inhouse. They give their non-enterprise level products away for free, so it'd be nice if they did the same with the Mac versions when they're ready.

Nah. I'd certainly say that they sometimes screw things up but defintely not 'usually.'

Well, it's shifting 700s by the bucketload in the States, but - happily - Palm are set to announce three new Palm Treo models soon, where there remains a massive Palm user base.

If the new models are anywhere near as good as the Treo 650, their future should be safe!

+ Sony

The clios were ace - had a play on several models and they seemed like nice machines.
Walkman, Discman - all good. Minidiscs weren't bad either. I know plenty of peple who still use them and they're dead handy for recording stuff on the go.
They have some quite nice compact cameras

- Sony

Can't stand their laptops (that I've seen) - my boss has had two, and they were both burdened with some truly hideous sony software that replicated features already in windows, only much worse.
I also don't much like their memory stick format, as it's more expensive than the others and is ONLY on Sony kit. (nice if you're all sony I suppose)
And nobody with an ounce of sense buys a Sony mp3 player.

IMO, of course ;)

It’ll be very interesting too see what they’re going to do with them. Will they have wifi, 3G? Will add a 2megapixel camera? Also will they get rid of that fucking ariel! Its 2006 not 1996 for Christ’s sake! :D

The odd thing is that the American market seem to prefer phones with aerials!

I've kinda grown to like mine too - it makes it easier to yank out of your pocket!

I don't think wi-fi is going to emerge quite yet on the Treo, but EVDO looks to be the possible big news.

I will say - again - that the Palm absolutely whips the ass of Windows Mobile when it comes to usability and overall phone/PDA integration.

IMO, of course, but I've given Windows a long, long try out and I wasn't impressed!

Piece of piss to remove though!

Natch :) Although it does boggle me how the Clie had really nice software, whereas Sony PC software has been universally shite, IMO. And yes, the laptops are dead slinky.

Yep, the Sony laptop software was awful - the Bluetooth app made a sound like a submarine's sonar!

The stuff they did towards the end of the Clie range was great fun - the TH55 had this way cutesy PIM interface with Japanese style icons you could drag over the screen....
