Help install Clean Win 10 on locked Thinkpad

ed - an obvious suggestion in hindsight. I'll try them monday

@suray - it is set up to boot right off the HDD and I can't change boot order

Yes F12 with this one.
It gives me 3 options: Windows boot manager / NVMe): Intel SSDPEKKF512G8L / PXE Boot

So none of them will let me boot off the recovery disk i've got plugged into the USB port

oh dear!

So you need to get access to another PC, take the disk out and put it into the other machine, preferrably a desktop so it can just be a second drive. Format, install a live boot linux onto the disk and make it bootable. Ensure live boot has grub2, it can see the ISO from Grub2/ISOBoot - Community Help Wiki and reboot and then choose it from the boot menu.

This is fairly technical, the steps are a long way from comprehensive, you're going to have to do some reading but without the p/w to the bios this is about as good as it gets.

try all the ports. On my Lenovo it only seems to boot off the one.No idea why.

cybershot - No joy on either USB - but a good thought - thx
Sunray . Thanks - that looks like a project for a wet weekend. Question. Assuming this works and I end up with Linux, would it be possible to then revert to a clean copy of Windows?

You can dl the win 10 iso from the ms site. Download Windows 10

Grub2 is a bootloader that loads at boot time to boot OS's, if you have put the ISO into the correct location on the disk (see the grub2 doc I linked) it'll let you choose to boot from the Win10 ISO and therefore install windows 10. The interaction with linux will be pretty minimal.

Nice one
That sounds cool. I'd better start educating myself before I get stuck into into this

There are ways to unlock the BIOS with a hardware tool and flashing modified firmware, but it'll cost you (less than a new main board though).
Decided that this was too technical for me. Ditto the SSD swap suggestions

Can anyone recommend someone in the Brixton / sarf London area that might be able to successfully take on such a project (for reasonable payment obviously)?

Ability to ignore the redundant "property of Evil Megacorp" splash screen a distinct advantage ;)

From that post it sounds like some software and hardware might be needed for this.
No idea if they can help but reach out to this lot: The Restart Project - The Right to Repair and Reuse Your Electronics they're brixton based and is where I got my current linux (with optionnal windows 10 install) machine.
