Injured squirrel - what to do?

Of course the RSPCA won't do anything, because squirrels are an invasive species and considered a pest. They won't do anything for rats, mice, or urban pigeons either. If it had been an injured badger on the other hand they would have been more interested.

I agree with Mrs M, there's not a lot you can do for it besides making sure it has easy access to food and water while it heals.

Enormous levels of misdirected sentimentality on this thread...

The RSPCA came around here a few weeks back and ordered the council to get a cherry picker and rescue a pigeon that had been trapped under some netting on their roof, and then to replace all the broken pigeon netting, so there you go :)

As for misdirected sentimentality, what's wrong with wanting any animal to be sorted out in a nice way?

Thanks subversplat :)

Well anyway, misguided or not, I've been down today and left loads of nuts and seeds as well as two containers of water. I couldn't see the squirrel, but the way I see it is - either the food and water will help it survive, or it'll simply get eaten and drunk by other local wildlife.

I gave the location wrong in the OP - it was actually on Barrington Road, near the abandoned Barrington Lodge nursing home that I saw him. So if there are any misguided fools like me who want to put down food and water for my little injured tree-rat friend, that's the place to do it.

:)

How about walking past a homeless person and inviting them into your house for an evening?

Oh no, won't be doing that.

No maybe I won't, but I'd happily provide directions for centre point or something where the trained volunteers can do what they are supposed to do :)

It's nothing to do with helping the animal or not, it's the whole tone of your OP, especiall WRT to the RSPCA.

The RSPCA couldn't even advise on what to do. I asked if I should feed it or leave it be - they said they just didn't know. I call that pretty bloody useless. I don't care if you don't like my tone :p

FFS now people, there's been enough sympathy for it now. It's a rat with a bushy tail and better PR, destructive fuckers as anyone with a garden will know.

The idea that you need some kind of special squirrel operatives to facilitate euthanasia is laughable. Just stamp on the thing rather than worrying about a squirrel suffering for a couple of days. Concern's one thing, but after two days rodent watch gets a little too worthy.

Don't read the thread if you're getting pissed off with it.

Don't post the thread if you're going to get all precious when people say things you don't agree with.

I think people have given honest advice and shown genuine concern. But there has to be a certain point when you should get a grip and put things into proportion. It's a sodding grey squirrel, not something the RSPCA and a crack team of animal operatives are going to rush in to save using miraculous medical techniques and post traumatic stress counselling.

I could understand if it were a family pet or an endangered species, but this is a fucking squirrel. It's a wild animal, wild animals get all sorts of injuries and illnesses. Personally I don't think humans should interfere. I think the time and effort Brix is expending on the thing is daft, but I suppose it is her time and her effort.

Personally I'd kill it if I could get near it, but then I'd kill a healthy grey squirrel anyway if it didn't require too much effort, and eat it.

If I couldn't post on U75 unless I was going to promise not to get riled by anyone I wouldn't post anything (and I suspect the same is true of most posters) ;)

Seriously, what's the problem? I tried to find out what to do elsewhere, couldn't so posted on here where people might know what to do for the best.

Seems to me it's you that's getting precious. If you're not interested, or you find it irritating, don't read it. Simple as. :)

Perhaps Brix should start campaigning for all cats to be kept indoors to avoid bird mutilation. Or beer to be banned from pub gardens to stop snails being drowned in discarded glasses. There's a lot of danger to animals out there. They need a programme like Watchdog, for squirrels and other rodents

Some sympathy's understandable, but after a few days?

Look, people said from the first page why the RSPCA wouldn't help and yet here you are still bemoaning their lack of activity, like you're the Mother Theresa of squirrel Nutkinville.

It's a rodent and you're being silly now.

It's fun :) Wildlife rescue makes me smile.

BTW that RSPCA pigeon 'rescue' you mentioned was almost certainly because the residents didn't want a trapped disease bird flapping around shitting on their roof and wanted the nets restored.

As pigeons are classed as vermin I suspect the RSPCA disposed of the bird quickly afterwards. There may well be a pigeon sanctuary, but you've got to wonder why.

It was the council's own building and the RSPCA didn't do the rescue, they just told the council to do it and fix the netting so no more birds get caught :)

In my last post about the RSPCA I simply said I felt they should have been able to offer advice. Which doesn't seem unreasonable.

But, whatever. I'm not going to argue with you about it. Like I say, if you find it irritating, just don't read it.

This thread is very funny. Bonding with maimed rodents. Is it your bestus friend now Brix? Only friend? :)

In my last post about the RSPCA I simply said I felt they should have been able to offer advice.

Well the advice would be "leave the fucking thing alone and let nature take its course. Grey squirrels are a nuisance anyway", but it doesn't sound very RSPCA-like so they say they've no advice.

;)
