according to someone on another site watching CNN,the epicentre was on land,so the chances of a tsunami are slim :)

Indonesia hit by strong earthquake: tsunami alert issued

Breaking news on BBC now:

Strong earthquake rocks Indonesia
breaking news

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 has rocked eastern Indonesia, meteorologists say.

The tremor struck south-west of Manokwari, West Papua, at 0443 on Sunday (1943 GMT), the US Geological Survey said.

A tsunami alert has been issued by the local geophysics agency.

The Indonesian archipelago straddles several continental plates where seismic and volcanic activity is recorded on an almost daily basis.

Someone chuck some alkaseltzer into a volcano,I think the Earth has a NYE hangover.

Sometimes these things trancend forums so the general is a good place...oh yeah I see your  and raise you a :hmm:
Don't be ridiculous. How does it 'transcend' the correct forum?

If people post in the correct forum in the first place, there's far less chance of pointless duplicate threads being created, and thus less work for the mods and less confusion for posters.

It's a simple courtesy all round, really.

Your post is almost too stupid to comment on, seriously. :D

Everyone knows there are times when dumping it in the politics forum wont get the discussion you want. Also more people view the general forum, some people find it's just their natural hang out and will post there. You get a very different character of thread in each forum...

I could go on but I reckon you've entrenched yourself in your own opinion about this to the point of senility.

You can throw childish insults around if you like, but you know that I'm absolutely right - and what I've said is fully backed up by the FAQ too.

3. Starting new threads/replying to threads/polls. PLEASE give new threads concise and meaningful titles and post them into the appropriate forum.

Asking people to post threads in the right forum is not some sort of pedantic, nitpicking exercise, but something that ensures that people can find threads easily (both now and later) and helps cut down on duplicate threads - which in turn leads to more work for the moderators.

This has been explained several times and is dazzlingly self-evident, so I've no idea why it hasn't registered with you.

Still, if you wish to raise this issue further, kindly do so in the feedback forum as I have no wish to see this important thread further sidetracked.

fwiw kid eternity, I usually do a 'new posts' search, so it doesn't necessarily mean it's going to get my attention in general, but not in the other threads... and lots of other people do that too.

Genuine question, btw. It is Indonesia isn't it? I wouldn't wish a tsunami on my worst enemy.

Well that's almost kind of you. :D

I'm in Indonesia (Central Java) well away from this event. I was up and around at the time as Michelle was giving us grief as she had woken up and the milk bottle was empty but we didn't feel it at all here. First I heard was on a local news report.
Bloody big walls of water hitting the place isn't really a worry as we are at about 1000m ASL but there are earthquakes here as in all of Indonesia. A couple of active volcanoes not so far away as well.
Dieng is the most famous of them with a mud volcano bubbling away all the time. Some clever sod built a geothermal power station up there for cheap leccy. Loads of farmers live up there as crops grow like stink in the volcanic mud.
I have a piccy or two somewhere.
If I do die in a seismic event I'll let you know posthumously. Worried??????:D

my screen just rumbled when I turned it on,don't know if that means that there was an earthquake just as I turned the machine on,or if it was a latest one. But it's a 4.9 near the coast of Papua.

I haven't been abroad much, but funnily enough I didn't have to travel abroad to experience my first earthquake. It was in 1984 in Butlins in Pwllheli in Wales. I began to wake up from a dream where someone was lifting our chalet with a big JCB and was shaking it about. When I woke up that was exactly what it felt was happening! Earthquakes are very disorientating and frightening experiences. The only damage was to a glass louvre. I think a cup fell too and a stone I found on the beach. I didn't realise it at the time, but seemingly it was Britain's biggest earthquake - a whopping 5.4 on the richter scale.

my screen tells me that there's just been another 4.9 in Papua

My daughter was crying for milk again as the news was on but i did hear that some had died and that there was serious damage in the area.
I understand a 10 year old girl was killed.
Seems there have been a series of aftershocks.

By the way xes, where are you?

I've been watching the local news this morning.
Seems things are still a bit rough over there with loads homeless and a relief effort ongoing.
