Indisputable Facts of Music

Dubversion said:
have you looked at the charts in other countries? and do you gauge the worth or otherwise of a country's musical output by its pop charts?

i have to answer in the negative to both, but to be honest i'm not sure how else you would guage something as subjective as what the OP said by any other means - the charts should be indicitive of the tastes of the majority - if only because other than ringtones there is no other way of measuring it.

DJ Otzi is number one in germany, the proclaimers are number one in the UK - its looking good for team UK right now tho

People in english speaking countries don't listen to non-english language tunes because they're bigoted cunts.

I think you might be over-stating your point a tad :D

At some point in the 1980s, every conversation about music eventually featured the following exchange.

A: Level 42, utter garbage.

B: I agree, but Mark King is a brilliant bassist ...

hehe, best observation yet, I reckon :D

The American charts are better than ours at the moment cos hiphop sells more, and indie sells way less. Of course they have problems with AOR and pop country.

for every huge band there is allways a better, less well known band which, either, inspired them, or were ripped off by them...

Roddy Frame was the best guitarist of the 80s, despite Marr, Squire and May's wanks.

;) :p

(probably bollocks but I have a head cold and a chesty cough)

Ha ha, so very true. :D

I remember unintentionally ( :D) hearing Level 42 play somewhere off in the distance at Glastonbury in '86.

-Thing is, it being Glastonbury, I actually at that particular moment in time did believe that Mark King was a brilliant bassist... :D :o

My mate saw them play. Mark King was lifted on a wire and flown over the crowd spanking his plank (bass) really really fast. He left after that.

Blue Monday will work like a charm in just about any club that plays music from 1980s onwards.

  • Blue Monday is the most overrated 'song' ever.
  • Punk died in 1978. When Sid Vicious died. Even though he actually died in 1979.
  • When a press release says that a band has split due to "musical differences" the real reason is almost always excessive drug use by one or more members.

I initially read that as:

'Mark King was lifted on a wire and thrown over the crowd, spanking his plank...'

...which would certainly suggest an admirably insane dedication to both showmanship and catapult technology.

-Move over GG Allin, 'cos Mark King's doing his thing! :D

Fans of bands will always immediately dismiss a band's second album (particularly if the band has got that bit too big), although years later it will be re-looked at and acknowledged that it was indeed better than the first.

Music maths fact

That the number of musicians who were once buskers on the London Underground (as claimed by record label press releases) can be divided by 100 to get the actual amount
