India- a checklist?

gabi said:
To be fair pavlik you did come across as a bit of a heartless, ignorant pillock in your post...
I disagree.
I was voicing an opinion, (which might change in time, or it might not)

I read posts every day on here which make me think 'what an ignorant, sorry, sad, twat'
....but I dont rant on about it, making out I know so much more about it than them. That would make me seem like a very unintelligent person imo.
Its all about opinions isnt it?
My opinion is different to yours.
It would be a very boring world if we all agreed wouldnt it.
You cant possibly see the world in the same way as me because we've lived different lives and had different experiences.

Personally I believe if you've got nothing nice to say about a person, say nothing at all.....
but,
thats just my opinion isnt it?

its urban innit.

Someone voices an opinion, they get insulted etc, etc

Lots of people have voiced opinions on here and haven't got the reaction your opinion got, why do you think that is?

Getting insulted by strangers on urban doesnt teach me to be a better person believe it or not. I just feel sorry for them.

I really cant be arsed to say any more on the subject. I know what I saw and I know what you're getting at but there's never any middle ground in debates here. You're either a cunt or you're not and I find that level of communication pointless.

I ended up thinking, 'if you've got the sense to go blagging every day but you put that filthy dress on and dont wash your hair or clothes then i've got no respect for you'

Hmm.

Just got my India visa arrived at 8:30 left at 2:30 what a great system they have down there!! Phew

Worth getting some strong anti mosquito spray 50% DET from Nomad or somewhere...I even met a friends dog who at nightfall would rub his nose against a sprayed person to stop them getting bitten...must be horrible to be a dog

a net and send yourself a email with your numbers contacts ect ...Oh and a sense of humor & a small pack of wet wipes

A LARGE pack of wetwipes!!!!

I've given up on that DEET shit, it's poison. You can buy summat here called Odomos which is DEET free and seems to do the trick.

Also, if you can, get Malarone anti-malarials, expensive, but minimal side effects and you only have to take then for 2 days before you enter an affected area and then 7 days after you leave.

Oh yes, scan yer visa and passport into a PC and email yourself that too. :)

Oh, what happened! :D Everyone has got all cross.

Anyway, I'm in Pushkar now, which is alright, lots of mossies though and I can't find the Pink Floyd cafe!

I became poorly in Pushkar after a visit to the Pink Floyd Cafe. I wanted a break from curry so had falafels on naan bread. The menu advertised itself as washing all produce in iodine water so safe to eat. I only ate hot food. I remember it tasting just of garlic and a few hours later I became very ill. I had to dash quickly up from the lake. I was staying at a cental hotel with a beautiful inner courtyard with a bakery attached. At night you had to enter through a cute lil door cut into the huge wooden gate. I was ill for about 3 days. First food I ate after was a huge round of cheese on toast, chocolate cake and a pot of tea rather than the dry toast and curd suggested.

I stayed there, it is a lovely place. :)

Nah, its not that bad, some nice all you can eat place and the flaffel is pretty decent. Ate it a few times and it was lush. Then again I ate everything from everywhere and never got sick.

Entirely depends on what you want out of a location. Apart from the lake, which is a Hindu pilgrimage site, there is nothing of interest. Well apart from the constant stream of backpackers. I found it quite enjoyable to sit on the roof smoke lovely hash, and chat to the constant stream of people coming through the hotel.

If thats what you want to do, its great. If its not then go elsewhere.

pushkar sucks. freak town central and that includes the hippy backpackers too. watch the brahim priests dont rip you off. its a common scam there.

I loved the Himalayas and mumbai is one of my fave cities :) makes me want to jump on a plane and head right out there again. been to India three times so far. love the place :)

Oooooh! This is making me want to plan a trip. I have been to India once, but only once and it was just for a weekend. I spent a month in Nepal and a weekend in Delhi/Agra/Varanasi.

I remember eating some of the best food I've ever had in my life in Delhi. Just a random, hole-in-the-wall place. I lived on streetside chai and scrumptious veggie food.

I recently befriended a theater director from Mumbai (we were both living in Berlin at the time) and I have several friends with family throughout India, so I reckon I'll have some specific visits to make when I go there.

How long are you staying, Yu Gi Oh?

Seventh Heaven? Sounds like it. We stayed there too and it is lovely.

Am now in Goa (two fingers to all the nay sayers!) and can't find a bloody bahng lassi anywhere, it's dry day in all the bars 'cos of the elections and I'm scared of wandering around trying to buy hash. (*wimp*). :D

To be honest I can't actually remember where I am in Goa but very near the station called madgoa or mogadon or something....

Strange how many people have reported getting sick in Pushkar. :(

Oh D, I dunno how much longer I'll be here, a couple of weeks I think. :)

It's about ten years since I was last in Pushkar and I found it kind of a chill-out from solo travel, one of the only places I found many other western travellers. Including one guy who was trying to plug his electric shaver into a donkey :D

Hiya! Hope yer still enjoying yerself. Sorry to get grumpy all over yer thread earlier.
Recommendation: if you want to find somewhere in Goa a little bit quieter than the party spots head down to Patnem beach, which is just south of Palolem. It's fairly low key still (or it was two years ago), with accommodation a range of budgets (I like the basic Micky Huts and Room - it's in a coconut grove/small farm), and some nice places to eat. Also, if you wanna goout at night somewhere with a bit more life there's always the livlier (and still lovely) Palolem around the headland which is easilly walkable.
Have a good time!:)
Pm on the way about the hash!

Thanks. :)

I'm in Colva and it's pretty quiet. :)

There isn't much point me going to anywhere exciting as I'm taking anti-histamines to try and reduce my reaction to my malaria tablets. You can't drink on anti-histamines, or I can't anyway. :(

Colva is gorgeous, it's fairly sedate and full of fishermen which is pretty cool as the fish is just incredible!

It's also a good place to go if you're about 40, overweight and like Kareoke! :D

Sounds like your having a great time...! :)

Personally i would stop taking the malaria tablets, they don't stop you catching malaria, just reduce the effects of it. The chances of you catching malaria are slim and it's not life-threatening with medical attention.

Well just my opinion, i suffered with the tablets and stopped after a couple of weeks. Have fun!

I'm tempted, truly I am, but a) I'm allergic to DEET. :D and b) there is someone in hospital in Colva right this minute after getting Malaria. :(

Nobody I met in India bothered with the tablets... i certainly never ever considered it ;) chances are pretty slim as i understood it...

Can't resist putting in my suggestion of places to go...

Are you going up North? Have a stay in Puri, Orissa State... magical place with legal state-run ganga shops ...bliss :)

I wont take them anymore and I dont use deet either. Theres enough nasty toxins in the world without putting that shit in your body.
Just cover your arms and legs in the evening and sleep in a mosi net. And use lots of incense or mosi coils in your room. jobs a goodun.

We got some great stuff from Lidl actually before we left for a couple of quid. all natural, no deet

Really? How odd, most people I've met have been using some kind of anti malarial.

I went to the docs this afternoon, he was properly scathing of my reaction to the pills. :D He also seemed to think that the malaria you can get in India was 'no problem'. :D Note, he wasn't saying that there was no danger of getting malaria, just that getting it wasn't a big deal.

Rover, I'm staying in Goa for a couple of weeks and then home, so no time for anywhere else.

Oh, and Belushi, I don't know what festival it was but when I was in Udiapur there was much throwing of powdered paints, banging of drums and stupidly exploded fireworks!

I don't think I'd ake anti-malarials if I went to India again, unless I was going to a high risk area. Goa used to be one of the places they said don't bother, but a recent outbreak of malaria in Goa changed things:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/main.jhtml?xml=/travel/2007/01/13/etgoa13.xml
Why not try and change the ones you're taking? Getting hold of some different anti-malarials should be easy in India. I'd recommend Doxycycline, as it has minimal side effects (the British Army uses that one, I think), but you have to take that a few weeks before you enter a risk area.

I think you'll proabably find its first time visitors to india who take the pills. Thats not meant to be in any way patronising, but returning travellers never seemed to bother...

Course things may have changed, I havent been in a coupla years now.
