Billy Ocean's video for "When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going" soundtrack for the Jewel In The Nile was shot in Brixton Academy with Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny De Vito in attendance.

Is this true

Why would the three of them be in London at the same time? Surely they would have done the video ages before the film came out over here, if it was that they were attending the films premiere. It seems unlikely. But if any one would know then surely the Academy themselves would.

Erm maybe they were in London at the same time to film the video?

Just a theory like ;)

Last Saturday at 4pm, I suspect that the market traders' own vans lining Electric Avenue pretty effectively blocked the line of sight of several CCTV cameras.

That is true, but now the market stalls have been rearranged and the dustcart removed the market is much clearer for most of the day. There's alot less room for sketchyness.

The main problem is the blind spot directly underneith the CCTV. The market traders directly underneith there have continuous problems (abuse, theft, customers scared off). I was talking one of the Fruit and Veg guys at the weekend - he's been there 50 years (!) and hasnt seen it this bad.

is Bobby Onion.

But being a goat, and one with good eatin' on him to boot, he would be very foolish indeed to venture anywhere near Brixton.

I think this shit is seriously in danger of killing Brixton off as a functioning community if it's allowed to go on like this much longer.

not so sure ... is it possible this is just a teensy bit scaremongering in the wrong direction ... see this from the linked report:

"John Gordon, secretary of the Brixton Street Traders' Association, said: "The issues are drug dealers and parking...

If I couldn't go on foot/ public transport into Brixton centre I might not bother either, the wardens are on a gung ho crusade and I don't much fancy fighting them .... daily abuse, threats and occasional violence from other locals has toughened them up a LOT ...

truly sucks that index is going but I have to admit I was not a particularly loyal customer - liked it but didn't buy enough there. my name is trabuquera and in capitulating to amazon's filthy globalised lures i added to the slow death of independent retailers in my neighbourhood... :o

I was on a bus the other day where a Lambeth traffic warden told the bus driver he'd had a knife put to his throat by an irate driver the other day.

I can well believe it. I REALLY pity the poor bastards who have to patrol Rushcroft Road.

Is it really? How can it be that Brixton can support yet another fish market but not a bookshop?

Fraid so. Brixton Fish Market to be precise. They seem to be doing a fairly tidy job of it, but it's no Index.

how is a pizza place a change of use and a smelly fish joint NOT? How many bleedin stinking fish markets do we need in Brixton?

surely we have enought fish markets already??? how about a pizza place instead?

Erm Ecco, Neon, Atlantico. Endless Pizza Chalets/Rings/Dial-A-Pizzas etc. Thankfully Pizza Hut died off from KFC corner.

How many pizza places do you really need?

The second you start heating/preparing food (even a tea & coffee I think) it's a change of use category. Here's hoping it wont be too stinky.

exactly! ecco has limited opening hours. and the pizza chains are crap. neon is overpriced wank and antlantico feels like being in a fish bowl.

How about a nice cafe then? sort of like a mini lounge?

How many places in London are like that or have the turnover to keep turning over decent pizza? The other examples tend to be those greasy indescribable things served near Camden market or from a Pizza hut counter - yuk!

And besides, would you really want to grab a tasty slice in the bustle of a working market. It's not the prettiest place to eat - hardly an Italian piazza to eat your pizza in is it?

Pizzas are so 80s anyway. Overpriced bits of poncey cheese on toast, with some of the highest GPAs in the catering industry.

Got to admit I thought the pizzas in Neon were ok, albeit on one taste, and the recent (1/2 price) deals they keep running make them pretty darn cheap. I've never eaten them in Atlantico but the food always looks alright. In total that's still 3 respectable authentic style Italian pizza places in the centre of Brixton, all within a few mins walk. Thankfully there's nowhere really serving those extra-grease pan US versions.
