Independence Day

Wasn't the same scene though because in B&T there wasn't a range of sub texts to choose from including the USA saving the planet for all peoples - implying the leadership role, the benevolent, the saviour, the beacon of hope. .

Maybe it's been too long since I saw it. I thought the turning point in the battle came when they were able to communicate by Morse code with fighter squadrons all over the world, allowing a resistance to be formed, thus buying time to figure out how to beat them.

The movie looks different if you don't have a chip on your shoulder.

Hideous dirge

The presidents speech (this is our independence day) is my least favourite moment in the history of film!!

It's from the Americans. They
want to organize a counter
offensive.

REGINALD
It's about bloody time. What do
they plan to do?

Because the U.S are our LEADERS. Without them we are nothing

Well, it would be pretty tough to take on the aliens without US help...

Had some good moments, and I still enjoy watching it from time to time. Pretty awesome special effects too. I love Jeff Goldblum's and Judd Hirsch's characters.

No honestly you don't realise how bloody offensive that line in the movie is.

Its like the rest of the world has been in hiding waiting for the clever americans work it out as we're all useless by ourselves.

Plus... Now that america has saved the world the whole world can celebrate american values of freedom by celebrating independance day with the almighty leaders of the world. Oh can we really join your precious holiday? Why thank you. We were going to have one of our own but thank you for just assuming we'll fall in with your holiday!

bwhahaa

If the film was British made, it's likely that the British armed forces would've saved the day.

No, it's likely that some hitherto failure geek nobody underdog would save the day.

Or, if he were still alive, Sid James.

But a token yank actor/character would have a large contribution to the film for fear that we couldn't sell it to the american market without one.

I would pay good money to see the Carry On version of Independence Day :D

Could be worse, could be Battlefield Earth, truly the worst film ever made.

There comes a point when a film is so bad that it's actually worth watching. I'd rather sit through the sheer lunacy that is Battlefield Earth than through Independence Day.

I see this is on the tv this evening – not bad, is it?.

Is that the rubbish portraying the Heroic President of the USA Himself piloting himself towards the Bad Aliens to Save The World. While the other leading chartacterr "accidentaly" crashed with his plane right at the spot where not only his wife (and child?) but also the dying president's wife are barely surviving the Bad Alien's Attacks and see him ahppily appear through some smoke and fog?

Among these products serving to indoctrinate the gullible US viewers into feeling superior top of the world, that was really one of the most typical I wasted time looking at. (It is just such fun to observe that I can't help myself.)
It is to me even more stunning that they firmly believe the rest of the world adores their jingoist flag waving just as much.(And that they get these idocies sold outside the USA in the first place.)

salaam.

Gotcha!!! That's what they wanted you to think. :)

especially the part at the end where all the simple tribespeople of the poor backward nations come out of their forests to marvel at what the world policeman has done :D It's hilarious.

If it is the "movie" I think it is, the most hilarious was teh setting for grateful Arabs chearing the Great USA. At the background pyramides (what else?)..... floating on greener than green grass. You can't invent it if not US Made.

salaam.

The movie was released in the summer, mainly for an american audience. Thus, the obvious tie in with the US holiday. Really, if you're going to get offended watching movies that weren't targetted to you, the best thing to do is not watch them.

Watch some nice movie from Handmade Films, instead.

I used to think you had good taste. Battlefield Earth is unrelievedly bad to the point of being unwatchable.

Who is 'they'?

Mars Attacks was made by Americans too. What was it that 'they' were trying to say?

I agree. I reckon the Iraqis are definitely better at kicking alien ass than the Americans. Just look at Iraq, for example.

Just so long as the aliens use land transportation that the Iraqis can blow up with IEDs...
