Incident on Somerleyton Rd, outside the school. 8/05/09

hiraethified
Eme reports two police vans, a ton of police activity, an ambulance and the road taped off right outside the school. Any one know what's going on?

One of the old guys who sits on the bench in the sun watching the world go by said a schoolgirl got off the P5 and a car was overtaking a van at speed and hit the girl. I saw the car on the wrong side of the road by the bus stop with a caved in windscreen :(
A lot of vehicles go down Somerleyton Road as if they were at Brands Hatch. It's residential on one side with loads of kids with a school on the other side.

There's some appalling driving on both sides of the estate, and there's no shortage of utter fuckwits who hurtle down Coldharbour Lane at ridiculous speeds.

And then there's the idiot motorcyclists...

There need to be proper (ie not the new ones about an inch high) speed humps down there - IIRC there are only those mini bumps..

I'm not keen on speed bumps because they knacker the axles of larger vehicles such as fire engines. I just think people who go above 20mph on residential roads should get their cars crushed.

I favour the slightly more extreme option. Ban drivers from wearing seat belts or having airbags, and require every steering wheel to be fitted with a six inch blade pointed towards the driver's chest. Then let's see how well you REALLY drive.

There is no need for the six inch blade. If you think about it, there is a solid shaft which is like a javelin running from the middle of the steering wheel to the front wheels. If the front axle hits a solid object, that javelin will pierce your chest if there is no airbag or the bag fails.

There is also the possibility of being suffocated by the airbag.

I live on Josephine Avenue and it's common to see knobends in cars and vans overtaking at insane speeds. Now and then the bend in the road catches them out and they come a cropper - tough shit. What worries me though is that sooner or later we'll have the sort of incident the OP is reporting. I hope it wasn't as bad as it sounds and looked and the kid's OK.
