In Utero

Iam said:
Jawbreaker are sorta somewhere in the middle, but they have other overtones, too. Still... Bad Scene, Everyone's Fault and Boxcar are proper pop-punk...

in my day we called Jawbreaker emo.

yeh. that's exactly what i thought. po-faced, portentous, rumbling bollocks.

That is of course your subjective opinion and I won't bother trying to persuade you otherwise. I'm not a massive prog rock fan BTW and I just don't share your reading of that album.

pop-punk. now if there's an expression likely to trigger my breakdown towards murder it's pop-punk. one word for you: everclear.
I loved everclear. :p

I also loved Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden all of who I listen to more than Nirvana these days.

Really? I know there's a lot of different sounding acts enveloped therein, but nah, not for me.

Rites of Spring are emo.
Sunny Day Real Estate are emo.

Blake Schwarzenbach's a motherfuckin' genius.

:)

Alice In Chains I think were the only one of those major bands that I think had any consistency. Facelift was a load of proto-metal toss but after that they just shone. Good old smack.

I fucking loves Alice in Chains - 'specially the unplugged.

downloading what i think is the steve albini original version off soulseek now. what is the deal with it? how come it wasnt used?

it's all over the shop - oink!, soulseek etc. Search on Albini In Utero.

if you can't find it, give me a shout

Shows what I know, I thought the final album was Albini. No wonder I thought it was a bit below par for his work.

it's not that it wasn't used, as i understand it, it was subject to additional polishing by someone else entirely as the original albini version was refused by geffen.

from wikipedia:

In Utero was mastered by Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering in Portland, Maine. According to Azerrad, apart from the minor modifications to "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies" (with Scott Litt), the rest of album was left as it was recorded, and all that was done at the final mastering stage was to sharpen up the bass and boost the vocals by 3 decibels.

so there.

also, i've read interviews with albini where he claims that it is impossible that any of the versions floating around on the internets are 'his' version.

but i take it all with a pinch of salt. it's my favourite album for reasons above and beyond simple aesthetic pleasure..

well ive got both versions now and i cant tell any difference yet. still its not the worst job in the world - listening to in utero over and over :)
