In praise of Portuguese custard tarts

Well, I'm back from my little excursion now. Went to the deli for elevenses and enjoyed a cappuccino and two sickly custard tarts –*while I still have the excuse of "eating for two". Or, in my case, eating for an extended family.

Ahh... the reassuring smell of custard

I've put £3 back in the bedside cabinet, HeroineSheep, and I'd be grateful if we could keep this addiction business under wraps.

I've never had one :(

*cries*
Don't think I have either... but I work near loads of Portuguese delis/cafes :p

(I can pick you one up if you're coming to bookgroup on Thursday? Or for the next time I see ya ;))

I'm off on a pastry hunt now. I shall report back. If I have to resort to French pastries, so be it.

I'm not coming to bookgroup - I'm on my lollydays

I might get 2 for me on the way home then ;) :D

I went to where I thought the Portuguese sandwich shop was and they didn't have any. But I got a twisty pastry with a lemon glaze instead :o

I know :(

I'm wondering if I can identify the coffee shop where KellyDJ goes and get a pastry and scoff it before I get back to the office. If it isn't the one I'm thinking of, then I'm going to have to go to Paul's Patisserie. And they are in opposite directions. It's making me anxious.

But I must have pastry.

Sorry Trashpony just seen your post.

I use 'near' in a loose sense. It's actually a sandwich bar opposite Farringdon station which is about 10 mins walk from where I'm based. I get off at Farringdon station so pop in sometimes.

For a nearer place I'm sure Paul's do them

They truly are the cakes of the gods
I've been avoiding them as I'm trying to lose weight but if I was one of those lucky people who could eat all day and stay slim these would probably be my staple diet

Yeah, I'll have to knock the pastry obsession on the head once I've had the baby and remind myself that using 500 calories a day while breastfeeding is *not* an excuse to stuff my face full of tarts :o

I don't think they do. But then Paul's do soooo much yummy stuff it doesn't really matter. :)

Flan Nature from Paul's if you're after a custard fix...mmm!

portuguese food is yum generally. always like to go to cascais and have one of those giant platters of seafood. washed down with a nice cool glass of sagres of course

Another Brixton stockist is that Portuguese deli on Atlantic Road, near M&S. But I expect some of you knew that already.

They're lovely

I'm going to get one tomorrow from the Madeira Cafe that Dubversion mentioned - perfect brekkie/cycle energy food on the way to work

Hehe, couldn't resist

:D

Where is this Paul's place? In Farringdon?

I assume they're talking about the french sandwich/bakery chain. At least, that's what I'm talking about :o

They're springing up all over the place, and they do gorgeous cakes and really yummy sandwiches on lovely fresh crusty bread.

God I might have to go there for lunch now.

it's a chain of sandwich/cake shops. There's one on Fleet Street and one just opened by Paternoster Square (next to St. Pauls cathedral). I think there's also one in Covent Garden but I could be wrong.

Their cakes are heaven :D

Love them, love them, love them. Always end up going up South Lambeth Rd. to the bakeries there to get some.

I've tried making them myself, and while I've nailed the custard *dead* on (i mean, really, it's egg yolks, cream and sugar), I just can't do the pastry right.

At first I wondered why you were sending me to:

But now I see the £5 blowtorch... tempting! I don't know if chef's blowtorches are are different to these bog standard ones. Probably not.

Chef's blowtorches are smaller and you have a better control of the heat (they don't get so hot)

There is a Paul's patisserie in London Bridge station. They ignore me yesterday and took the order of the man behind me but then forgot to ask me to pay so it all worked out in the end

I cannot believe that anywhere called FAB FOOD could possibly do a decent custard tart.

To be honest, I haven't tried one from there. I saw them when I was walking past this morning :o
