In 14 weeks' time I want perfect skin. What do I need to do?

See now I've tried the Biore pore strips and nothing happens. I do have blackheads in the usual places but they don't come off with the strip.

When you had your facial, did they not do pore extractions for you? They should have done. Blackheads would have come away with them.

Er, I dunno. It was a "rejuvinating facial" at a spa. I'd never had one before, I didn't know what they were doing. There was massaging and creams involved. It took half an hour. My skin felt very nice afterwards.

Oh and 'for god's sake,' we are made of between 55-75% water, (75% attitude in your case:)) every cell of us needs water to function as it should. It also cleanses. Fine if YOU dont want to drink the water you need but missfran asked for some advice so... :)
 i'm not denying that we need water, i ain't that stupid.

what i am saying is that there's no evidence AT ALL that drinking litres of it daily does you any good.

it gets trotted out relentlessly on this board, but where's the science for it?

in fact there is a lot of evidence suggesting that drinking lots of water is actually detrimental to health, there is an optimum amount for people to drink :)

as for your skin MissFran - eating well helps, as does getting a good amount of sleep for you

but you know, all this is in vain as you'll get up on the day to a ma-hoo-sive spot that only your make-up will hide  :D :(

You'd have thought that someone, in a spirit of crude levity, would have offered the OP a facial by now. Well done, Urban. You have showed restraint.

For god's sake don't have a facial the week before. I've had some of my worst spots after facials - the last time I thought I was growing another head!

*Insert obligatry facial joke here*:D

go to lush. speak to their lovely assistants. buy a load of stuff. it'll sort your skin out.
i'd suggest (details on their website):

crash course in skincare
angels on bare skin
celestial
mask of magaminty (2/3 times a week)

At the risk of being unpopular, I'm not a big fan of Lush products. I think they're overpriced, self-consciously wacky at the expense of actual facts about the benefits and the shops are a full-on nasal assult.

If you don't wear make-up and are prone to eczema - might be worth testing out some of the make-up before the day.

An extraction is where they basically look closely at the surface of the skin and squeeze all the crap out of the areas where the pores are enlarged...Usually around the nose and on the chin areas. What comes out is pretty gross actually... like little white little worms of excess sebum and crap  which tends to block the pores and cause spots. Feels quite nice when it's being done IMO. :o

Yeah, Chairman Meow, when I have facials, I come out in a couple of spots too...but after that, my skin is generally radiant. That's why I suggested a cool-off period after the facial to enable to spots to form and be dealt with before the big day. :)

pfftt ;)

they are not overpriced! the cleanser i buy is £5 a pot and last for 2 months. also the body cream i get for my eczema is £9, lasts a month and more importantly, it works!

the shops are only a full on nasal assualt as the products aren't overpackaged.

I agree with this, I hardly drink any water at all and I have very good skin for my age. Most people get enough water from food and other drinks, without having to drink extra.

If I drank two litres of water on top of all the other liquid I have I'd be on the toilet every 5 minutes.

Wiki has a good article regarding acne. Lots of informative stuff, and debunks a few things in the process. E.g:

"Acne is not caused by dirt. This misconception probably comes from the fact that blackheads look like dirt stuck in the openings of pores. The black color is not dirt but simply oxidised keratin. In fact, the blockages of keratin that cause acne occur deep within the narrow follicle channel, where it is impossible to wash them away."

Not surprisingly, there is no mention of drinking excess water as a treatment. ;)

well yes, of course having good skin is going to ultimately come down to genes and -well, luck so maybe Geri, you are one of the lucky ones.

That said, missfran, do whatever you feel necessary for your day. :)

Who would have thought some people were so anti-water. Ie demanding scientific evidence for why it's good for you..I would have thought it obvious. Just so strange to me...I love the stuff.

Maybe if i'd have advocated copius amounts of alcohol or say.. crystal meth, I would have gotten a different response.:p

I recommend Clinique 3-step, cleanser, toner and a good moisuriser from their range, like Dramatically Different the yellow one. They also do the 7-day scrub but I just use it 3 times a week. I noticed a huge difference in my skin as soon as I started using this range.

Water stops you from dying. It is not a magic cure for specific ailments, but something that is required for all sorts of reasons. For that reason, your body is very good at making you drink a reasonable amount. If you drink an unreasonable amount, the excess will not "go towards" treating a specific condition. Nor will it have a linear general benefit. The excess will instead be expelled by the body.

How long is 14 weeks?* If you start a routine that cocks up your skin will it have time to recover?

*:o :D

I use a sauna mask..you can get those cheapo sachets for like 99p from Superdrug. When you put it on, it feels hot... like a...guess what? A sauna, yes! What it does is it opens your pores so that all the daily crap and grime that soap/cleansers cant reach and gets trapped (making pores bigger) is removed. Afterwards you're meant to use a toner to it close your pores after and remove all the mask residues and all that crap... if this is done regularly enough, pores get smaller.

Smaller pores, smoother skin. :)

The sauna thing, the Biore one, I bought because I thought it would feel interesting. It did. However, it made my skin yuck yuck yuck. Never again, I say. I agree with the not changing stuff, because if I had used that before my wedding, I'd have looked like shit. Or maybe use it well in advance to check.

However, if you are to use anything new, use No7 Protect and Perfect serum - the stuff people rioted over. It's lovely. Makes me look less like I have been hanging from the rafters downing tequila all night and more wholesome and fresh. Like a milkmaid.

If it's the stuff I'm thinking of, it's the one "cosmetic" product that has any recognition in the medical community (i.e. is not just a very very expensive moisturiser).

Aqueus Cream instead of soap. It moisturises and can be used to replace soap. You can rub it in or wash it off. I use it myself when my skin starts to dry out because of being in windy cold weather and I am a bloke. You can get it from Boots or Superdrug.

simple, just drink plenty of water each day (more than 8 pints)

cleanse gently each morning, and night, remembering to use a gentle toner, and light moisturiser

dont eat too much crap, but plenty fruit and veg instead

no miracle creams needed, just good old fashioned common sense :)

This thread is a great example of how different things work for different people.

I got on to the Lush Enyzmion moisturiser after being recommended by a couple of people here, a number of us experiemented with the aqueous cream regime (some had success but many gave up) and Clinque stuff just brings me out in spots.

How long does it take for you to see the results of a new skincare regime?

Personally, as it sounds like you've got pretty good skin anyway, I wouldn't rock the boat by trying anything radical.

I think the best thing you could do would be to avoid picking your skin when and if you get the odd spot.

Oh and whilst dehydration does no-one any favours, the whole drinking loads of water thing was in a list of "debunked medical myths" recently.

The advice to drink at least eight glasses of water a day can be found throughout the popular press.w1-w4 One origin may be a 1945 recommendation that stated: A suitable allowance of water for adults is 2.5 litres daily in most instances. An ordinary standard for diverse persons is 1 millilitre for each calorie of food. Most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods.w5 If the last, crucial sentence is ignored, the statement could be interpreted as instruction to drink eight glasses of water a day.w6

Another endorsement may have come from a prominent nutritionist, Frederick Stare, who once recommended, without references, the consumption "around 6 to 8 glasses per 24 hours," which could be "in the form of coffee, tea, milk, soft drinks, beer, etc."w7 The complete lack of evidence supporting the recommendation to drink six to eight glasses of water a day is exhaustively catalogued in an invited review by Heinz Valtin in the American Journal of Physiology.w8 Furthermore, existing studies suggest that adequate fluid intake is usually met through typical daily consumption of juice, milk, and even caffeinated drinks.w9 In contrast, drinking excess amounts of water can be dangerous, resulting in water intoxication, hyponatraemia, and even death

Right, I'm thinking about this early. On May 3rd I want absolutely no spots, smooth all over, generally gorgeous skin. What do I need to do to acheive this?

I am 29, do not currently cleanse (apart from washing with soap), or tone or moisturise. Or exfoliate. On the plus side, I also do not wear any make-up. I have normal skin (friends say it's good), occasional spots (which I pick and make worse :o ) and am prone to eczma on my wrists.

I will be wearing a sleeveless dress and make-up on the day.

Tell me, gurus of urban beauty, how I may acheive loveliness.

try eating this for your lunch every day:

olives, greens, oily fish, brazil nuts, tomatoes, olive oil and avocadoes. These are the top skin food of the goods, which i have researched. I eat this most days, and my skin has improved dramatically, yours will too! x

also, take a supplement called Perfectil, drink green tea, and lots of water, obviously.

it really is what you put INTO your body more than what you put on your skin.

i would recommend a serum rather than moisturiser, or perhaps Bio-oil

try that lunch though, it works, i promise- god bless and good luck! :D
