Immortal Technique

London Eye

Been listening to this rapper's songs and lyrics, particularly "Poverty of Philosophy" and a few other heavy-hitting tracks. I'm not surprised he's not signed up to a major label, but he reminds me of when hip hop was truly dangerous, not in a 50Cent corporate way, but in a real stick it to the system kinda way.

He's playing at the Coronet, Elephant&Castle on Wednesday.

Has anyone been to any of his gigs? Anyone got any views about his lyrical content? Some of his stuff is probably too hardcore (controversial) for Urban75 regulars, which I suppose means its pretty hardcore. I'm talking about Cause of Death particularly. But the following is about as well-informed and hard hitting a hip hop track as it's possible to be.

yeah been into him for a years, just waiting for the third passage which sadly looks to not be coming out for a while(if at all) and what you talking bout too hard for urban

Immortal Technique is fucking win.

Dance with the Devil

I dont think he is interested in signing to any major labels or anything. One of his songs is about it, iirc.

I'm talking the lyrics to . Might just piss off one or two of the regular posters :hmm:

The to Cause of Death is quite funny too. Anyone think the guy sounds like the guy Eddie Murphy takes the piss out of in Beverly Hills Cop? Know what I'm saying?

Oh and is another killer track.

The conspiracy shit is irritating, but I can see where it comes from, and it isn't as if PE never said anything daft.

Take a look at Dead Prez as well.

Isn't that a bit like David Cameron saying that he likes the Smiths or the Jam, but doesn't have to agree with the lyrics?

His political views and his conspiracy views about the cause of all the suffering in the world seem to be in most of the songs I've heard so far.

"I'll expose Bush and Bin Laden, as two separate parts of the same seven-headed dragon" - Cause of Death.

Of course you could argue that hip hop is generally, if not entirely, cartoonish in its exaggeration, but I think you'll find he believes some of it, or at least says he does on the interviews I've seen. If I found those views 100% repugnant, I'd find it difficult to listen to him at all.

I certainly don't agree with all he says, but some of it makes me stop and think. You can ask no more of an artist.

I reate immortal technique as about the best lyricist ever.

He is pure class, like his flow like the majoroity of his beats.

He would be wasted on a major label but am vageuly hoping that he signs to talib kwelis label or something like that.

Um, in Peruvian Cocaine, he clearly blames the CIA for conducting the flow of cocaine to America by sustaining corrupt dictators. Most would agree that is the case, but if you asked a government official, I'm sure they wouldn't agree.

"American Drug Distributor
Honey I'm home, nevermind why our bank account's suddenly grown
It's funny, we're so out of this debt from this money we owe
Woulda ya...mind if I told you I had two governments overthrown
To keep our son enrolled in a private school, and to keep ya tummy swollen
C'mon, our fuckin' home was built on the foundation of bloody throats
The hungry stolen of they souls, of course this country's runnin' coke
I took a stunted oath to hush the one's who know
But CIA conducts the flow of these young hustlers who lust for dough"

Where's the evidence?

Hey, at the end of the day it's just a song, right? ;)

Fair enough (though until a CIA official is arrested it remians speculation surely). So what do people think of the track Cause of Death? Can it be seen as a dark cartoon track, can it be listened to in that way? Or is it too irritating because of the lyrical content? Same goes for Bin Laden. Anyone know if the Eminem lyrics are taken from another track or if it's a proper collaboration?

he has some serious skills, dance with the devil actualy managed to shock a teenage me and that is somthing that not much managed to acheive! only one problem i got with him... ive heard a couple of radio shows where he "freestyles" and claims so when infact he manages to merge together existing verses that a seasoned listener notices imediatley. he is a damn good poet, but as for the best emcee? abdominal takes that crown for me, eloquence and poetic flows with a smile... maby my hip hop taste has gone soft with time...
wish i was in town, skinnyman and imortal technique together should be a dam good show!

Have you heard Dance with the Devil yet, Londoneye?

Just checked the lyrics. Ok, raw as it gets. So he's got a sick imagination is what we're saying here right? Or just how real is he? Whatever, I think I'm confusing reality with art, even art with a political message is still just art, right.

K :o

he gets no where near my best mc list. A hell of a lot higher on it then abs but no where near.(well maybe top 20 but i struggle to work it out after top 10)

Yeah he is hardcore.Sick rhymes. You know a rapper's good when you can't even tell what fucking rhyme is gonna come next out of their mouth..and this guy is untouchable lyrically.I played my gf "Dance With The Devil" a few years ago and she was truly horrified..If I was in the country I would pay just to see Skinnyman supporting :D

Yup, Dance With The Devil is some piece of music.

I really like most of his stuff and he's certainly not about to sell out to any big record company.

Before we go any further..
I would like to send a message to all the underground mc's out there, working hard
The time has come to realize you networked in a market
and stop being a fucking commodity
And if you didn't understand what I've just said then you already waiting to get fucked
For example; a lot of these promoters are doing showcases
throwing events, and not even paying the workhorses
They trying get us to rock for the love of hiphop or rock for the exposure
Now look man, I don't mind doing a guest spot for my peeps
Or, or, or doing a benefit show, but don't lie to me pussy
Coz I find out I'm paying your lightbill, I'm fucking you up nigga
Besides, you ain't doing this for the love, you ain't doing it for the exposure
you charging up to 10$ at the door, and you ain't tryin to give me shit??
So wait a minute... you want me to go shopping, cook the food, and put it in front of you
but you won't let me sit down and eat with you? The fuck is that?
Niggaz need to start playing their position, man. Just coz you throw a party
a hosting event or an open mic or a showcase, or a battle
that don't make you important at all
Without me and everybody like me out there
you ain't nutting but a good idea, motherfucker
So stay in your place

And to all these bitchass saronayas who are too lazy to come up with a way to sell records..
That they keep recycling marketing schemes and imagery
C'mon..
There is a market for everything man
There is a market for pet psychologists nigga. There is a market for twisted
shitfetish video's. For nipplerings, for riverdancing, for chocolate cupboard roaches..
But you can't find one for cultured hardcore reality and hiphop?
People like you: the house nigga executives
and them rich motherfuckers that own you; you the motherfucking machine man!
You and all these niggaz talking about the same shit
with the same flow over the same candy-ass beats
But I refuse the feed the machine
And Im not giving any magazine money
So maybe my album won't get 5 mics, or double-x-l's, or 5 discs
Whatever man, fuck it
But then again; you don't own me, and none of you niggaz ever will
If I'm feeling what you fight for I'm rolling with you to the end
But if not, then FUCK YOU!
And the more that mc's, producers, dj's
and independent labels start to grasp the conceptuality
of what their contribution to the business of hiphop is
rather then just the music - the more the industry will be forced to change

Oh, heh, and one last thing;

You don't have to agree with everything I've said
But don't ever be condescending to me
Picking up your wack ass friends that rhyme and being like
'Ow yeah, Immortal Technique - he's aaiight'
No nigga..
Your mom is pussy, that's aaiight, ok..
Your peoples getting shot dead in the street, that's aaiight
I'm the motherfucking Immortal Technique nigga! The message and the money!
And you ain't got either!
Remember that!
Punk ass motherfucker..

hehe :)

What FridgeMagnet says. Great MC, some solid left wing politics but, alas, he is also given to spouting 911/ Illuminati bollocks, which I just tune out.

he gets no where near my best mc list. A hell of a lot higher on it then abs but no where near.(well maybe top 20 but i struggle to work it out after top 10)

working out a top ten is almost imposible for me... the problem i get is that its either gotta be top ten of what im feeling right now, or most seminal, or most intricate... its a hard list to compile.... neither IT or Abs would be doing the poetic big word stuff without the daddy of multi sylabic rhyming... big daddy cane(ed and able??):p

he needs to get some better producers i think a lot of his beats are very mediocre

refreshingly honest of him to admit gang raping a woman :(:hmm:

i saw him in concert a few years back and it was awesome

Assuming you're referring to Dance With the Devil (which also includes a murder), I very much doubt it's literally autobiographical. You don't need to have done it to be able to imagine it.

it is autobiographical, he *really* did what he talks about in the song

he made a long speech about it when i saw him live before he performed that song

I could write a song about what it's like to sleep with Scarlett Johansson, and prepare a lengthy preamble for public performance, yet it still wouldn't necessarily mean that I ever slept with Scarlett Johansson. No-one who has participated in, and got away with, an anonymous gang-rape/ murder is going to admit to it at great length on record. If it is true, however, then he's scum who deserves to die, so why would you listen to his music, or do anything other than condemn him?
