Put it back onto dual mode again and see if you can pick up 3G coverage.

I had exactly the same thing with a 6630 last week, drove me mad. Got itn working in the end just by repeating the steps we have just gone through.

One final question before giving up.

Underneath the battery there is the IMEI Number for the handset. This will look something like 358788854111447 (15 digits)

Underneath this number there is a code...cna you tell me what that number is?

If you put the phone back together and it still doesn't work then...

1)SIM is OK
2)All obvious phone settings have been checked.

Have you made outgoing calls on that SIM in another handset recently? (to prove network is OK, confirm there are no bars on account)

I suspect there are a few bugs with the 6630. I had a fault about a month ago where a 6630 wouldn't work with one particular SIM, even though that SIM worked fine in all other handsets.I also had the exact same problem you're describing above.I'd try it again tomorrow, if it doesn't work then it may be time to get back onto customer services. Will try and rack brains for any other possible causes in meantime.

PS:That code thing is just to guarantee you've taken the battery off to force a location update-sorry.

You wanker :p :D :D

That's Mister Wanker to you :D

One final thought....have you got the memory card in the phone? Try removing the card or if you don't have anything important on it then try formatting the card.(definitely possible but you will need to find a manual-can't remember offhand how to do it)

Someone else reading this must have had the same problem.

I don't know about anyone else but I'm gobsmacked at Zed's level of expertise with this utter pig of a device. Respect!

You think I have a gold tooth? :D
(it was probably just a bit of sweetcorn)

I have this phone, funnily enough - I wouldn't reccommend it to anyone though - it's a bit shit but it's always worked.

Nor me :)

It worked fine for the week I used it before it got crushed in my jeans

Teach me for trying to be a mechanic

Oooh a gold tooth would really compliment your hair luv

You could be like my mate Mick Hucknall :D

zenie, I've thought of something else to try....Tools/Settings/Phone/General/Orig. Phone Settings

Phone will ask for a lock code. This is the five figure security code...set to 12345 as default on Nokias. (to be on the safe side make sure all your contacts have been copied onto your SIM memory).Don't do this if there is anything you need to keep on the phone (SMS & VPS mailbox settings won't be affected)

Always worth a go, although I more than suspect that you're looking at a replacement phone anyway.

As an experiment, try taking the phone with you when you are in a different location (ie: ideally more than five miles away, further if poss). Put the phone onto GSM and reboot by taking the battery off. I agree this is not something you should have to do to get a phone working, but I',m wondering if 6630s have a problem switching between 2G/3G.

When you take the phone back to the shop ask the bod behind the counter what is the current firmware version for 6630s on Vodaphone? To find version enter *#0000# and this should show you the version and the date (although on current form may not work on your phone) It is possible to do a flash upgrade to the firmware on a handset without sending it off if they have the right equipment. It may be that the original software is faulty and needs to be upgraded (not exactly a first for Nokia).

I'm on T-mobile :D

Done all that couldnt get the firmware version :(

and the settings restore phone settings thing made no difference.
