I'm going veggie.

italian cooking does some marvellous veggie food, particularly what would be termed 'peasant' food ime.

as does greek and southern indian food. its something that gets easier the more you do it but i think its worth the effort tbh.

Give me some tips/foods/anything.

I'm sick of salads, but do notice how much better i'm feeling physically. (ok ok ok :) )

I've stopped smoking, now it's time for the meat to go.

(i'm lactose intolerant, dunno if thats relevant, well it is cause obv i cant have some stuff)

But anyway. I know theres a few vegetarians on here who can steer me a little bit. :)

Thanks. :)

please tell me your just drunk again :p

I am a veggie and I survive pretty well on it :)
I also hardly ever use cheese or eggs in my cooking...would be a bit lost without onions though but thats just a matter of taste.
Just be adventurous, have fun trying all the veggie fake meat stuff sure but you don't really need it, it's more about texture, you may miss the sensation of nomming on some meat so thats where that can come in handy. I do love a bit of quorn in curry now and then and use the quorn mince to make a lovely veggie shepherds pie. I am sure you will find loads of great recipe's online which you can adapt to suit your tastes.
It really isn't hard to be veggie honest :) x

I know! Phew right?!??! :D

Picture the scene: you come in hungry, I have som big mushrooms, griled and cheese filled. With bacon bits in.

You'd beast them, wouldn't ya?

No one can resist the bacon. Other than all them veggies and vegans like, but apart from them NO ONE can withstand the clarion call of bacon n cheese.

I'd beast you!! Look out! ;-o

holy shit radtown!!!

The Cheesecake Factory has fab vegetarian food, i ate a portobello mushroom burger and some roasted artichokes....it was ace.

this is gonna be easy. :)

Heh, I just started eating meat again after 14 years as a veggie.

How come?
I have been having cravings for chicken lately, Not eaten chicken since school and then it was chicken burgers :D thing is my mum brought round a roasted one and left some in my fridge and I wasn't at all tempted but in my mind its lovelier than reality ever could be.

I have been having cravings for chicken lately

I opened a tin of chicken soup for my gf last night and it seriously smelt like cat food! It didn't smell like soup until it was heated.
I've not eaten meat for over 20 years and the closest I get to it is feeding my cat, so I think that's what I now associate it with :D

This book is great - Leiths Vegeterian Bible:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Leiths-Vegetarian-Bible-Polly-Tyrer/dp/0747557160

As well as loads of recepies it has nutrition, techniques, basics, details on ingredients and how to cook each vegetable.

The index is also great for finding recepies for any veg you happen to have. I get a veg box also and that means that I am always trying new recepies from this book to use up the veg.

ooohh that does look good thanks :)

yeah? why?!?!!?

You need to make sure you pay attention to iron intake.

good thinking, im bad for fainting as it is....maybe i should take an iron supplement :hmm:

thanks y'all. :) x

haha yep and I buy cheap cat food too from lidl so cant say that appeals :D
You are kind cooking meat if you don't eat it. I have done it myself but only rarely and for people I really love!

Down with this sort of thing...

;)
:p

You can. But you can also make sure you eat stuff like chick peas, various beans, leafy green veg, cereal like Weetabix (if you don't mind the sugar), lentils, dried almonds. And so on.

i dont use sugar (well once in a greaaaaaaaaat while i do) but the other stuff sounds good

Vitamins and minerals factsheet from the Vegetarian Society is very good on how to achieve a balanced and healthy diet.

ooooh thanks paulie :)

I see from your quote that I wrote "dried almonds" for some reason. For the sake of accuracy, I meant dried apricots. Apologies.

If you arent taking in decent quantities of the foods people have mentioned then definitely do this, had two mates end up with iron deficiency anaemia now as a result of insufficient diet. Tho to be fair only one was a veggie.

Three veggie cookbooks I couldn't live without, and which don't just rely on cheese and onions:

I don't cook meat. I thought it was only fair that I compromised and opened a tin of soup for my gf though, as she was knackered from our 3 week old daughter... she washed up though :D

Check Truly Italian by Ursula Ferrigno. You cant actually get it anymore as it's out of print, but if you can get a second hand one or a library loan then you totally should do so, it's a great book.

Get Bringing Italy Home too cos there's loads of good veggie recipes in there that aren't in Truly Italian.

Rose Elliot's veggie/vegan cookbooks are brilliant. Easy to follow recipes, not too complicated, lots of variety though.

i am a masssssive fainter, so i guess i should keep an extra eye, even with the right foods. hmmm.

You don't need supplements, you just need to eat a varied diet and cook proper food.

im gonna try!

I reckon you need a good bit of meat inside you.... ;) :D

you do :p...no i do!!! i do!! :p
This is great. As are:

The down-to-earth Mediterranean Vegetarian Cooking by Paola Gavin, and the more poncy The Vegeterranean: Italian Vegetarian Cooking by Malu Simoes and Alberto Musacchio.

nice, looks like im gonna be buying some cookbooks !! :-)

Yes, the Paola Gavin edition of Italian Vegetarian Cooking is very well used in our kitchen.

an endorsement from you always holds weight! :-)

thats what i need as well, easy to follow :D

thanks!!!!

You don't really need cookbooks tbh, if you know enough about what you're eating and what tastes good with what then you're really only limited by your own imagination.

obviously you'll have to do a bit of research but it'll be worth it in the long run..although i'd take supplements until you're confident you're getting everything you need.

worried about the fainting thing tho..anaemia is easily solved but can be dangerous in the long run since crap blood means you're not getting the nutrients you need to be healthy
