First is it OK to post URLS of boxen that I'm looking at? I want a box with loads of RAM and a dual -core thingy. I could build or buy off the shell. Seen some really cheap Dell stuff advertised recently...

don't think there's a problem with posting URLs here - are you hoping to get people's views on which is best?
ref Dell - only comment is it can be hard to fit 3rd party hardware into some of their cases

No third party stuff aat all. Just loads and loads more RAM!

The desktop choices

The server choices (More likey to go for one of these)

A rack server. I'd put this into a data centre. I already have a d/c lined up. Wouldn't need much support, just loads and looooads of bandwidth.

If you're looking for dual core then make sure it's a Core 2 Duo model, the slowest is only fractionally slower than the fastest Pentium D 965EE. The 6400 is pretty much faster across the board than the 965.

If you're not gaming and you're buying the RAM in seperatly then Dell isn't too bad at all. Compare it to the systems on Mesh and HP's website.

Thanks. Should've made this clear. It's a devel box and not for gaming at *all*. I prolly won't use any of the graphics features if I do get one and take it to a data centre. I'll get the RAM seperately from somwhere like cruicial and take it from there.

Shame on me, once a box is working then I forget what's inside. I do want to spend some time doing "research" for the options and best buy though, so keep 'em coming!

I really don't like Dell for anything I have to do much work on, particuarly desktops but when you a filling an office with dozens of the things they are better than most and I've got five of the Power edge 860's in the rack next to me, I hate building 1U's; Dell is the obvious choice for simple cheep servers that I can wack the same image on to or BootP and not have to bother about again.

Can't beat a DL380 - probably a bit pricy for this thou.

Innit; I've got a couple of second hand U1 HP's and compaqs which are really soild machines. In that rack as well.

I really don't hold with buying one off machines, I can always build something much closer to what I want and normally with more bang for the buck. However, when you want a lot of machines it is easier to buy them and if you need them cheep then Dell is an easy option.

They're also not very reliable...! But if you have a good contract at least their good at getting replacements to you...
