Ike Turner Deaded.

Ike Turner was a musical genuis and will be sorely missed by me but no doubt not by his ex wife. His work with Tina shone brighter than any of their contempories and will stand out in a class of it's own for ever. RIP Ike. :(

If Nutwood fucking City fucking Limits is number one I'm firebombing every radio and tv station in the country.

Well, I don't listen to music radio or watch the tell so I don't really give a shit but that song is fucking awful.

wouldn't say it was awful but incredibly overrated. they released some remix version a few years back that was utter shite though

He had dozens of less famous tunes that weren't shit, though. Doesn't excuse his behaviour in any way, but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

why does everyone have to include a caveat that he was a bad man? does unreserved liking of his music imply support for wife beaters? :D

No, not at all. It's the "devil effect" (Or negative halo effect). I don't like his music, and therefore his character is an additional justification I can use for not liking him. I can say: "Hmm, figures. How would you expect the man responsible for Nutbush to behave?" Whereas I can cheerfully ignore tales I hear about people who produce music I like.

He was a genius, the only person who could play guitar and piano to such a high standard.

Can't over state his influence on modern music as a talent scout for Sun (introduced Howlin' Wolf and Little Milton to Sam Phillips amongst others) as well as his own work with his Kings of Rythym. Not a fan of the Ike and Tina stuff and it is a shame that he will be remembered by most for the wife beating thing.

He became ruthless bastard in order to survive as a black man in a white dominated world (50's and 60's music industry), when he finally gained some sort of financial reward for his work with Tina he turned into a self confessed meglomaniacal coke fiend. No excuse for his behaviour but others have done similar or worse and been forgiven, (Elvis for example).
Great musician not a great person.

"Sure, I've slapped Tina... There have been times when I punched her to the ground without thinking. But I never beat her."
Lovely man

Why mess around with the "probably" if you're going to say people who don't share your taste are fuckwits? :D
Kicks :)

I'll rephrase. If you think the sum of his contribution to music was producing one famous tune that was shit, then you're a fuckwit. Clearer?

When he was 13 the KKK beat his father to death.

He was indeed a deeply troubled man. It doesn't excuse some of the terrible things he did.

He was one hell of a musician though.

RIP.

For me, Ike Turner's best track was an instrumental he did called "New Breed part 1". You can hear a clip on Amazon.

He pioneered Rock'nRoll and the distorted guitar sound, and for these things alone his place in musical history is assured.

That's very sad Johnny that a man that did so much will be remembered as a wife beater. Still he who is without sin can cast the first stone I suppose.:(

I wasn't referring to you by the way Johnny. It was the judgemental tone of people. I remember when I was a kid the biggest bastards used to have a few days where no one spoke ill of the dead. He did some awful things but....
