Iggy Pop

He's a old guy who needs some money.....The Stooges might be highly influential but highly influential doesn't pay bills. I say fair play to the guy - looked like he's taking the piss anyway.

He's a truly great rock act (especially with the Stooges), that should count for something IMO even if you don't like his ads.

BTW, I like his "Avenue B" album. It's different from his usual output, quieter and more introspective but it has a lot to say about getting older.

I can't help thinking that there are a million other things he could've done if he's short of cash though.

He was one of the DJ's on the radio station on Grand Theft Auto. No-one minded about that - he was pretty funny, even moaned about how broke he was: 'I got a yoghurt bill like a motherfucker!' :D All was well.

He could act a bit, do some more voices for computer games, do voiceovers in Pixar movies, all sorts of stuff. Anything but advertise fucking car insurance. :(

Iggy's just released an album called "Preliminaire", based on an idea by Michel Houllebecq (Mark Radcliffe's played a couple of tracks from in on his show), some of which features him speaking over a musical background. He's got an amazing speaking voice; strong, deep and compelling.

Although quite depressing at the time, he still is a god. Iggy and The Stooges, alongside The Clash, for me, just shaped my entire life of music. If it weren't for him I'd still be stuck in the, Smiths, Stone Roses and Oasis cliché which everyone else my age aspires to.

who gives a fuck, it's not like he's going back on some deeply committed principle. People need to stop projecting their politics and principles onto people they admire - they'll very often get it wrong

I remember reading an interview in one of the British music weeklies way back just after the birth of punk, where Iggy was tipping his hat to the US and UK bands. When he was asked why he had originally gotten into music he said something along the lines of "booze, drugs, pussy and cash".

This stuff is usually territory specific so he'll now have a pretty different image in the UK as compared with, say, his home market. I suppose you could say the UK was worth more to him as an advertising medium.

Lou Reed shilled for American Express as long ago as the mid 80s. And let's not even talk about Johnny Rotten.

I dont give a toss about Iggy Pop or his music, his day was before my generation I just wish he would keep his shirt on, the sight of a wrinkled 60 something old man is not what I want to see early in the morning.

<hugs to all the wrinkled 60 year old men reading this, I am sure you are all loved in your own way, just keep your clothes on in public>

I'd love to have been the advertising exec who decided Johnny Boy should be the face of butter. I kind of like the way he must have thought oh fuck it , it's only a job. But then I'd forgive him most things. ;)

Both Rotten and Iggy have been selling you stuff for years (records and CDs), making revenue for huge multinational entertainment corporations. Musicians doing an advert differs from this in only one respect: the contract is visible. This irritates some punters.

I have only seen pictures of him recently and he looks as far from the walking dead as can be. I heard a track from his new album the other night with him slow singing in French which I thought was lovely.

Who said anything about principle? I just said that for me he'd crossed the rubicon into fucking annoying prickland with these ads. People need to stop projecting the opposite of their views onto people so that they can protest about people projecting their views and principles onto people they admire - they'll get it wrong TIMES A THOUSAND!
