If you had the money, which designers' stuff would you wear?

Maharishi....not really designer designer though have spent £200 on their trousers before in my heady youth...actually still buy a lot of their stuff though wait for the sales...

i used to have loads and loads of maharishi stuff. got bored of it and got rid of most of it in the end.

If I was rich I'd still wear the same stuff I do every day now, I'd just have a lot more of it.

The only thing that would change is I'd have a wardrobe full of bespoke suits rather than M&S, and loads of handmade shoes.

I'd just wear very nice minimal and understated stuff by Comme des Garcons and Yohji Yamamoto which I do anyway as I get it free. lalala...

and Raf Simons and Helmut Lang stuff. But just the very plain fitted pieces, not the sillyness.

people should dress their age and not look like Timmy Mallett or some disgraced children's entertainer being led out of court for kiddy-fiddling with a blanket over his head like most clothes make folk who wear them look these days.

Not interested in labels, but some handmade suits and shoes would be nice.

anyone who would spend money on a 'designer suit' when they could get one tailor-made for the same price is a mug.

never had any shoes hand-made. It is something i aspire to :)

Hugo Boss, which can be got quite cheap, but the only good way is to go into one of their shops and try it on, which means you pay more.

None, I wouldn't really recognise designer stuff unless it has an obvious label on it. I'd wear different clothes if I was slimmer, but it would be mostly outdoor gear like North Face, Merrell and stuff. I go for comfy and practical clothes mostly.

I'd buy myself a Mulberry bag though.

A custom made Nudie suit.

John Richmond and Paul Costello and the divine Vivienne if she'd make her stuff a bit bigger.

Made to measure clothes and boots would win every time though if I was minted.

errr...wasn't 'Pleats Please' Issey Miyake?

Pretty sure it was as an ex had a very nice pleats please dress

Yes, you're right and please congratulate your ex on her excellent taste. Even the designer himself admitted in an interview (AFAIK it was in "Vogue Patterns") that the "pleats please" range had to be priced more expensively than he'd wanted to do it. The idea was that you'd buy a length of tubular pre-pleated fabric straight off the roll, cut along certain lines and suddenly have the garments in front of you. Way beyond my pocket, but lovely stuff. IMHO Issey Myake isn't for everyone as the designs don't reek of haute couture (ie. they don't look like you've spent a fortune on them), but they're v wearable without being boring, and they suit most shapes.

Anyway, that's one designer I'd have for daywear & casual , as well as Donna Karan (got a suit pattern of hers - v demure & simple at the front, with corset style panels to the sides and lacing up the back). For evening & best I'd have to have Alexander McCall, Vivienne Westwood, Badgely Mischka, and Vera Wang. This is just fantasy - no RTW designer stuff fits petites, and certainly not plus size ones - the nearest I get is the patterns, heavily altered.

:oGreebo you fuckwit!:o This is what I get for thinking about patterns at the same time as designers - I meant Alexander McQueen, not McCall.

Laptop, would I be right in thinking that one of your choices was a painter and another one a photographer?

my favourite current designers are Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier. I also love vintage Emilio Pucci (oooh those prints!) and a host of pretty obscure vintage labels.

For this autumn / winer season I'm loving Gucci's take on late 60s / early 70s psychedelic prints on black backgrounds with an abundance of fur and reptile skin and also Dolce & Gabbana's fabulous late 60s / early 70s inspired psychedelic paisley on black backgrounds (ALWAYS wear colour with black!) mixed with that heritage look that so fashionable right now.

mmmm :)

I wouldn't bother . People who wear designer labels generally have no clue on how to dress themselves and need the designer to do it for them ( like victoria beckham :D )

Yeah, yeah, I know we're all webels who should despise the shallow and overpriced high fashion world, but c'mon, if you had the money, who would be the top 3 or so designers you'd wear?

For me it would be:

Vivienne Westwood - she doesn't do seasonal fashion, just her own thing, punky, cut nicely for petite people

Jean-Paul Gaultier - like Viv, does his own thing, lots of cool pattern and colour, distinctive

Missoni - distinct style, wearable, again, lots of colour and pattern

I reckon you would like the stuff Luella has done this season as well
