If Scotland gained independence, what would the remainder of the UK call itself?

surely it would still be the UK it would just become the united kingdoms of alba, cymru, england and northern ireland

After independence?

Also, neither Wales nor N.I. are or have ever been Kingdoms.

(assuming that the english spelling would take preceedence over the gallic in NI due to their supposed englishness dispite not being attached to the mainland... )

I think you meant "supposed Britishness"

Actually, if Wikipedia is to be believed, the name UK only appeared after the union with Ireland.

So arguably the union with Scotland is irrelevant as far as the name is concerned.

If NI ever became part or the Republic of Ireland, though, then the name UK would definitely start to look a bit dodgy.

Well then it would be England like it was before the Act of Union with Scotland. Wales would be silent, just like it is in cricket :D

Do Wales and Northern Ireland not count as anything then? :(

Norn Iron definitely isn't part of Great Britain - hence the official title UKOGBANI.

And see my point about the Welsh enjoying being offended (until they get that independence which is so fully their due :) )

No (though it is part of the British Isles), but it is still something for England to be United with, alongside Wales. So it could be The United Kingdom of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

It couldn't call itself the UK because it no longer would be. As far as I know neither Wales nor Northern Ireland have ever been a kingdom.

It couldn't call itself Britain or Great Britain because that would be geographically inaccurate.

Has this question ever been addressed?

Less drunk

Considerably better than yow
Paradise

To name but a few

So, how many MPs does the Isle of Man send to the UK Parliament then?
I have no idea. Is that one determines whether or not it is part of the UK?
ETA Apparently, it's an "internally self-governing jurisdiction". If Wikipedia is to be believed :D

To which the response has to be - don't believe Wikipedia articles - apart from those that I've written or edited :D

ACT OF UNION said:
I. That the two Kingdoms of England and Scotland shall upon the First day of May which will be in the year One thousand seven hundred and seven, and for ever after, be united into one Kingdom by the name of Great Britain; and that the Ensigns Armorial of the said United Kingdom be such as Her Majesty shall appoint, and the Crosses of St. George and St. Andrew be conjoined in such manner as her Majesty shall think fit, and used in all Flags, Banners, Standards and Ensigns both at Sea and Land.

Ukogbani. I like that. We should call ourselves that from now on. Sounds African or Eastern European. Piss the BNP right off that would.

it wouldn't be a united kingdom anyway

Fuck that would be weird if that happened

No problem at all. Just ditch paddyland and the big lump on the left, call the bit remaining England and think how richer the country will be now we don't have to pay out so much dole money.

<ducks behind sofa>:D

If the aim is to become richer, then why not dump the North of England too?

I think the english deserve independance too. Then they could finally stand or fall on their own feet. It would do wonders for their sense of national identity too im sure.

Anyway, I really don't think we should be naming the rump; that would be anti-democratic. They should do that themselves.

We follow the precedent of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and call ourselves the Former United Kingdom or FUK. :D
Former United Kingdom of England and its Dominions?

Especialy when they see the trade deficit with the oil and gas gone. Then a few hours later when currency traders and bond dealers see it as well.........

While weeping with joy Germany accepts Scotland into the reassuring embrace of the Euro.

Er, the UK doesn't actually get any money from the oil, does it? It all goes to the oil companies.

IIRC the government was succesfully blackmailed during the petrol protest nonsense back in 2001 and now we effectively allow our oil and gas to be extracted for free. Someone should tell Alex Salmond this, however, as he seems to think an independant Scotland would be like a kind of North Sea Saudi Arabia :hmm:

Hmm, maybe he thinks that an independent Scotland could get out of those ridiculous contracts. I doubt very much that they could, though. Huge oil companies vs. small country - no contest.

https://www.og.berr.gov.uk/information/bb_updates/appendices/UKCS_Tax_Chart.pdf

This is just direct revenue and does not cover the income tax and other ancillary revenue streams.

But I was actualy talking about the balance of trade. Oil pumped out in the Forties, Claymore or Buzzard field does not represent an outflow of dollars from the UK. Our balance of trade is pretty shitty anyway, take away oil and gas and the pound is headed for the floor.

How would we divvy up stuff though? I mean we'd have to be a bit more sophisticate than 'bagsy the revenue from Weedgie boozers'
