If it aint fixed its broken

The On-One large flanges look good value though.
Yeah saw those but bit worried about the chainline - I'd have to get the 120mm track hub (and then add spacers to fit), but as the drop-outs on my frame are spaced at 130mm does that mean the chainline would be off?

if its a steel frame (and I'm guessing the Mercian is steel) then you can get the back end respaced to 120mm for a tenner - a visit to Mario Vaz in Catford will sort it (PM me if you want the number) or indeed any framebuilder will do it. He can also graft track ends onto a regualr road frame for £50 but you'll need a respray after (but he does resprays too).

130mm hubs often require longer bottom brackets - better to stick to 120mm. The on-one hub needs a bottom bracket of 109mm for a perfect chainline.

Steel, yup.

It's got fwd facing (almost) horizontal dropouts, I should be able to get away without track ends I would have thought..?

God, why is this so complicated! :D

Yeah, horizontal dropouts are fine - I just mentioned the trackend thing cos I thought it was worth knowing. Mario has respaced the dropouts on two of my frames and both times done a solid job.

Phew!

Will prob see if I can get away without respacing and using a 130mm hub to start with, am trying not to spend too much on it..

those old forward drop outs were pretty standard on older frames and are ok for general riding; however would recommend rear facing track dropouts if you plan to start racing

it may be worth fitting a chain tug to allow for fine trueing and tensioning adjustments

fixiefaqs is excellent for advice

Bump this

A. because its a fixie thread.

B. because its the Good Friday meet down Herne Hill velo tomorrow

C. because Mr Fraud has yet to sort out an Urban ride.

D. because I don't know if Richtea has taken the plunge yet, or Hans got her Fuji

E. because I can......yay!

Pickles - the fixie won't get built up for a few weeks yet cos the hubs only just got posted (and they're coming from Philadelphia)

I've had a few test rides on the Fuji and am deffo gonna get one...with the low pro handlebars (or whatever they're called) and the dropdown ones as spare....I just haven't got round to actually taking the plunge yet!

Fixie update - the Mercian is going to be singlespeed, I can't get used to fixed. :(

Should be finished today. Will post pics, it looks dead

Fixie!

I took my fixed wheel out on it's maiden voyage this weekend, and I have to say, it was an amazing ride! I love love love the feel of riding fixed! It was a bit hairy at times, especially blasting up and down Brixton Road, but the fluidity and synergy with the bike just blew me away, so cool!

My knees are killing me though! Anyone else experienced this, please tell me I'll get used it, not sure I wanna go back to my geared bike now:D

It came as a bit of a shock to me too, but its from braking with the pedals. Although I do have a front break, I find that I use it very seldom.

Another point, I have toe clips, and can't for the life of me get my left foot into em, what with the pedals in constant motion and all :) Anybody else having this (somewhat silly!) problem? I might just get cleats.

went to brixton cycles today. there was a fuji fixie in there for £300. I want it. how much do you reckon to stick a front brake on there? (just for safety like) ;)
