If Cardiff won the Cup this year...

They always seem to knock us out of the cup too.

Sean Bean must be rubbing his hands together at the prospect.

Mr Bean...Heh-he. I've only just realised that.
Yes I think I remember playing Cardiff and we won 4-1? I think the winners went on to play Arsenal. I think Cardiff were in the league below us at the time and I remember it cos the Cardiff fans all sat to one side of the away end which I thought was quite strange!

Seeing as we were invited into the English system back in the 20's (long before the underfunded welsh league was created) thereby making it a British league I dont think its unreasonable to be treated fairly and as equally as all other participants and that the existence of a welsh league is irrelevant.

Yep it was 4-1 and we went on to play Arsenal in the famous match that was replayed because of the goal scored by Kanu when the ball had been kicked out so someone could get treated! I went to the first but didn't go to the replay!!

According to this, whilst UEFA haven't said anything to forbid the Welsh clubs from being English representatives in Europe, the FA won't have anything to do with the idea of entering FAW member clubs on their behalf. In other words, Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham, Newport and co are perfectly welcome to enter English competitions but even if they win them they won't be entered into Europe by the FA.

This is probably another reason why the Old Firm won't be coming south any time soon either.

I believe that Hereford, Shreswbury and Chester enter the Welsh Cup and if they win that they can't use the 'Welsh' entry into the UEFA Cup.

I know, I think it's odd that Cardiff can never qualify for Europe (and didn't even know that until today!) and the FA probably should let them qualify. But I was just saying that the alternative might be having to play in the Welsh league!

They used to, not any more.

Even Rovers and c*ty have been known to enter in the past

They have qualified for Europe before by winning the Welsh Cup (as have Newport, Wrexham and Bangor within my memory- there's probably others I can't remember)

It wasn't always this way.

Back in the day we used to regularly compete in the Cup Winners Cup, via the Welsh cup. Indeed, we once humbled the mighty Real Madrid on one fabled day in the 70's.

However, Uefa put an end to our European jaunts back in the mid-90's as we played in the English league, effectively leaving the Welsh clubs in a state of footballing limbo.

It's a unique problem, but the FA don't have to tackle it yet. It'll be interesting to see what happens if one of the Welsh clubs do qualify for a European birth, given Plattini's warbling about the clubs of lesser nations qualifying for European competition.

It might also help Cardiff that England are bidding to host the World Cup in 2018.

Strange bedfellows indeed.

Never forget Merthyr Tydfil's 2-1 win over Atalanta at Penydaren Park in about 1988

Lost the second leg 2-0 in Bergamo but what a result :D

And if, as someone mentioned above, Cardiff took the FA to court to force the FA to allow them to play in Europe, couldn't the FA just turn round and kick them out of English football?

Yes. I sometimes suspect that they would do this if we ever got promoted to the Prem.

I'm not sure I'd take CyberRose's understanding of how courts work to be gospel, word to the wise ;)

i would like to see cardiff in the final, i'm cheering for them to win it, my best mate supports them and now the foxes are out i wish them all the best.

We're not in England though.

He's right you know. We're not!!!

What the fuck am i paying this English government income tax for then? Right I'm only paying my council tax from now on.

Or are we in Britain and are we in a British league rather than an English league. Seeing as there are three fucking non-english teams in the league and have been for ages there is no sodding way you can call it an english leauge.

Thats like say well yes britain may be a fully paid up member of the european union but no we aren't european, we're not in brussels are we. Thats where its being run from and we aren't there so no.

As I understand it, and I may well be wrong it goes something like this:-

When Europena place was guaranteed to winner of Welsh Cup, the likes of Liverpool thought it would be a good idea to enter, thus guranteeing european place. UEFA said that only Welsh teams could qualify by Welsh route so big clubs didnt enter, but some smaller clubs did. Several english clubs have won the cup, notably Shrewsbury.

When the old Welsh-english qualifying thing blew up a few years ago and the welsh clubs had to opt for either the welsh or english pyramid one of the problems UEFA threw up was that clubs affiliated to FAW but playing in English system could qualify in two countries. I thought that this is why Cardiff, for one, gave up their right to qualify by Welsh route. It now seems that we aren't allowed to qualify by English route either. I think we should take UEFA to the European Courts of human rights. We as supporters are being denied our right to drunken nights in bars in Tblisi, Helsinki and loads of other places ending in "i", just because we support a club which is denied any means of qualifying for european football, despite being in.......... europe.

Surely there is a precedent here, if Israel can enter the European Championships and play in european groups in World cup, then surely we can enter europe by english route.

It's not UEFA's judgment though, as I understand it it's up to the FA who they nominate to be their representatives in Europe and they won't nominate clubs who are affiliated to a foreign FA. Anyway, as I said above, Swansea 'qualified' for the UEFA one year by finishing sixth in the first division but the FA sent Southampton instead so Welsh clubs have never been able to qualify via the English route. The League of Wales was surely set up to safeguard Wales' right to exist as a football nation, given that it effectively only existed as a national team and a cup competition which was entered by several foreign clubs.

You should just resign from the FAW and affiliate to the FA. Bet the FAW would climb the walls over it though :)

Maybe it would be easier if you all buggered off to play Abergavenny Thursdays every week. Yes, that's it :)

You're right, its those wankers at the FA

What a bunch of cunts:

English Premier League chief Sir David Richards has shocked City fans by saying The FA would not award The Bluebirds one of their prized Champions League or UEFA Cup spots – even if Cardiff were among the Premiership high fliers in a few years time.

He told Wales on Sunday: “The English FA can’t do anything about the matter because the three Welsh clubs are affiliated members to The FA.

“It is up to Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham to pursue it with the Welsh FA. That should be the Welsh FA’s vision.”

But last night a UEFA spokesman shot down Richards’ argument. He said that clubs WERE allowed to be nominated by their host country, even if they didn’t play within its boundaries.
If by some miracle Cardiff did go on to win the FA Cup and really were refused entry into Europe, I could see things really exploding.

That's how I understand it to be. Uefa's hands are pretty much tied by their own rules. At most they can apply pressure to the FA.

Plans have been mooted, floated and stalled before about letting the "Big Three" enter some sort of team into the Welsh league whilst also retaining their status within the English pyramid. The last attempt was as recent as last summer, yet it was quickly shot down by the other members of the Welsh league who are very insistent that the likes of Cardiff have no place in Welsh football.

Anyway fuck the FA and the FAW both.

JTG if we play you at any stage of this season's Cup I will buy you your first pint of the day. What a fucking great run this has been for both our clubs. Fancy a beer, then? Beat the Baggies and it could be on the cards. Good luck mate

Now, how do I get to fucking Boro for a 1pm Sunday kick off? Any Boro fans on here? Is it still as wild as it used to be on that tree-lined square (Tavistock Square?) behind Ayresome Park?

Talk about a Cup run, in '94 I ran fucking miles after we beat them in a replay, big buggers, and all.
