I was at Luton Airport last night...

Prescribed medicines may well be excluded from this plastic bag malarkey, BUT THAT DOESN'T PREVENT SECURITY GUARDS FROM HAVING A GO AT ME FOR NOT PUTTING THEM IN A PLASTIC BAG.

The whole thing is bollocks.

Tell them to fuck off Equationgirl, the plastic bag rule is for toiletries, prescribed medicines are outside of that requirement. I've never had any hassles from any jobsworth on that. What REALLY gets me is the drinks thing, I always used to fly with stuff from the supermarket but now you end up paying millions ofr drinks after security.

Millions? Really?

Last time I flew, bottles of water from Boots were about the same price either side of security ;)

What they charge for a 330 ml bottle, best part of a quid when you can get a two litre bottle in the supermarket for 30 pence or somthing.
Tis all a scam innit.

I was in Luton airport last week, and it only cost me 20p for a clear plastic bag. From the WHSmiths.

Or.... you could buy a Sigg bottle (or similar) of whatever capacity you fancy and fill it up from any drinking fountain/tap, thereby not necessitating the production of endless quantities of thermoplastic based bottles that have to be transported (empty) from hither to yon, simply to be filled with water and then trucked to a distribution depot etc. etc.

Never mind APD, why not slap 50p a container "green" tax on bottled lifestyle water?

I was looking for a thread about this fire since Mrs Q texted me about it an hour ago, We're planning to go down to London to catch a show in the middle of next month for my birthday. We always drive down to Luton Parkway and park in the multi-story next to the train station when we go to London and Mrs Q thought that was the one that burnt. Would have thrown a spoke in our plans.

I gather the fire started in a diesel car and the newly built car park has collapsed.

In case anyone is not aware where the airport is

Imagine coming back from holiday and finding your car is caught up in the fire and presumably inaccessible if not destroyed.

I was waiting to find out that it was an electric car that caused the fire

If it is, then I can see them being banned from car parks, or multi-storey ones at least.

IIRC the London Underground has banned electric bicycles and scooters.

There was one guy being interviewed on the TV that had literally just had that happen to him, he was stood there with his suitcases outside the airport and did not look happy. There were apparently 1200 cars in the car park. I imagine this is going to get mess. People are going to claim off their insurance, the car park no doubt has those we deny all responsibility signs everywhere, I wonder if they find out whose car started the blaze and if everyone tries to claim on their insurance.

I was waiting to see the usual suspects blaming it on EVs without any evidence.

I didn't have to wait very long. Twitter is awash with them!

It appears to have been caused by a Range Rover but I'll wait for confirmation.

Almost as bad ;)

It was reported on Radio 4 that the fire would not have been so disastrous had the car park had a sprinkler system.

How can it be that there was no sprinkler system? Someone ought to be brought to book for such negligence.

Gasoline or diesel-powered cars are 19 times more likely to catch fire, argues the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), which has compiled the statistics for car fires in 2022.

In 2022, 24 electric or plug-in hybrid cars caught fire in Sweden, which accounts for approximately 0.004 percent of all electric and plug-in hybrid cars in Sweden. Of the entirely fossil fuel-driven cars, around 0.08 percent caught fire, writes TT.
