I hope your dog is OK. FWIW I was convinced my own dog was dying two years ago!
My dog is now 13 and does have the beginnings of heart failure. It's the worse thing unfortunately, that disparity of lifespan. We know they only live so long, but we keep getting them anyway because they bring so much happiness into our lives. I know it probably sounds cliched, but that's the thing I always try and remember.
In a way we ought to be jealous of our pets. They live completely unburdened by the knowledge of their own mortality and, when they do reach the end of the road, are usually given a peaceful, dignified death without fear.
None of which makes it hurt less for us of course.
(The only thing to feel sad about is / all the dogs and the horses you'll have to outlive..)

I think, if you get to a point where you're not sure what to do, take him to the vet and talk to them about how things are. I remember gsv so didn't want to let go of his moggy, but the vet was adamant that she was at the point where she'd have her pet PTS, because she was without doubt suffering at that point.
