I still don't see any rise in militancy or resistance

I predict worse to come on this thread. It's amazing how much mad anger and abuse is provoked by Poster's pessimism. It's as if Poster were a heretic...

Yes, certain types don't like it when I point out reality to them (as opposed to their dribbling far-flung fantasies).

There is some unknown level of economic woe, unemployment and general suffering that would cause critical mass, that we havent breached yet, and may not breach in the present economic woetime, hard to be sure.

The promise of a general election and a change of leadership will act as some sort of focus and pressure release, even if a large chunk of the population are cynical about all that sort of thing.

And even if the pressure builds to a level where everything changes, its easy to see it going in any number of very horrible directions. There is some sense that a whole bunch of paintful political truths are going to end up being learnt the hardway by the generations that have been lucky enough to avoid some of the old scourges such as absolute poverty, war, and working conditions, pay, hours etc that were far more of a nightmare than is typical today. If we run out of carrot, the stick is going to come more sharply into focus once more.

Or who knows, maybe things will go off in a strange new direction, perhaps driven by things we can do with modern technology that werent possible just a decade or so ago.

That's actually a pretty good summary of the situation, I think. Although I fear the former part of your post is more likely than the latter. The only "stange new directions" all this new technology seems to be taking us is towards a horrific world of microchipped humans having to constantly account for every thing they do, say - and eventually think - to their "betters".

He, he, I love it - 'poster the rebel', 'poster the heretic', 'poster the outsider'

Now you are something poster - something 'special'

rather than poster the dribbling pessimistic bore with nothing to say on any subject whatsoever

you show them soldier. i for one have seen the light :D

poster more doom and gloom. Yes in the UK the masses are not storming the barricades. The recession, rise in unemployment, very poor TUC and trade union bureaucracy are not showing a lead are all factors working negatively against any rise in militancy.

However, I am sure poster know his Marx and things can change. The anger over MPs expenses - where no doubt more will come out - will have a political impact.

When boy David Cameron comes in with a programme of privatisation and cuts - no diff from New Labour could see a fightback - the situation will be different - the fake NL friends of labour not, will be gone - I think this means everything to play for. I am sure in the beginning of the 19th century ye old poster would be saying the same thing but in the same century we had the Chartists.

Chin up poster.

But how many times has all this been predicted only for nothing to actually happen?

As to the TUC and union beaurocracy not showing a lead - well, what do you expect?

I think the Lefts obsession with whatever is currently in the news is a major problem. Anybody who wants social justice has to look well beyond whatever the current headlines are and focus on the kind of world we want. Its OK to go along to some degree with the news agenda and pose different questions and answers to the mainstream media but too often it just sounds like people just end up doing the medias work for them.
treelover is right about how certain (unsexy issues) are ignored by the Left.
But the welfare state is a difficult one for the Left...Purely defensive struggles dont seem like a good use of time but what should the Left argue for when it comes to Jobs and Welfare?
