I only just found out that 'Gulag Orkestar' was written by a 19-year-old

There was me thinking 'plucky polish/croat/slovakian/wherever indie kids fuse modern music with their native folk tunes' - turns out it's all the work of a Canadian teenager!

Some people are obscenely talented, and have the nerve to be so much younger than me, Kurt Cobain died before they would have known who he was. Curse them and their talent and their drive to use it :)

Is this him?

Looks extremely slap worthy imo. Also are you sure he's canadian, the internet seems to reckon he's American.

World is not a very helpful term is it?
No, but this is the section of HMV in which you will find it :) They're Tauregs from West Africa.

He's got a face asking for a slap and no mistake.

talking of gipsy stuff, there's a compilation of that sort of stuff out on basement jaxx's atlantic jaxx label, came out earlier this year. anyone heard it? is it any good? (sorry to hijack your thread, oh crispy one)
It's called 'Gypsy Beats and Balkan bangers' and is rather fine.
A similar thing is NY based band Balkan Beatbox whose album has been played muchly here:cool:

I really love this "Pobjednicki Cocek" track (zshare) that people were dancing to last year as 'Fizheuer Zieheuer'.
SWEET! Thanks, I was listening to Fizheuer just yesterday and wondering about the source material. It's a cracking tune (I like all 37 minutes of it, but I'm weird like that).
Liking this tune. What's it off?

Been trying to find out myself, but from the title it seems to be from a multi-disc comp, which I would def buy, discogs is no help :(

Yeah, love FZ but mainly in the mix. I'm glad the first time I heard it was in a club, cos it was so fucking surreal. He is really on top of his game atm, new track 'latinoamericos' is similarly loooong and hypnotic, and his tracks with Jay Haze is about as close to a summer anthem as minimal techno gets!

I found this initially, but the more I listened to it, the more the complex sounds and melodies distinguished themselves on each track and the more I loved it.

I would posit that albums with a very strong and identifiable sound/theme that is markedly different to a lot of more mainstream music - certainly that I listen to anyway - can often come across as repetitive on first hearing due to the strength of that prevailing sound.

Subsequent hearings then reveal more and more of the depth of the individual songs.

Certainly to me, all Arabic music sounds remarkably similar (perhaps identical!), but I am sure aficionados of the form would raise their eyebrows in surprise if I told them this.

I reckon an album made by a standard four-piece western rock band would elicit much the same the same response from those who had never really listened to that type of music before, although to my ears, each track on the album would sound completely different even if I haven't heard it before.

Anyway - not saying you should like it or indeed that you *gasp* "just don't get it maaaan", merely that you inspired some rambling musings with your post!

:)

I didn't give it that many listens to be honst, I pretty much disliked it instantly and I'm someone who really likes Balkan and other Eastern European folk music. This folk/indie hybrid just struck me as watered down and dirge like and it quickly got on my nerves in its monotony. Real Balkan music is much more rythmically interesting and varied than this.

fair enough!

Can't say I have ever heard any real Balkan music to compare...

I would say though, that Fizheuer Zieheuer should probably been credited as a remix.
Yeah, now that I've heard that track I completely agree.
Still, I'm really liking what he's doing at the moment with the hugely drawn out washes of sounds. It's all beautifully disorientating, minimal and rich at the same time.
I'll have to check out the track with Jay Haze, as I don't know it at all.

I know it probably is watered-down version of eastern european gypsy music aimed at middle class western indie kids, but fuck it. Some of it is hauntingly beautiful.

Also, stuff like this can be a gateway for people to get into the 'real mccoy'.

I hate the Beirut album so much!!

I admit that I bought it because I liked the photo on the cover :o (especially after I read that it was found inside a library book by accident) and because I have a soft spot for Balkan and Lebanese music... I really thought it was a european gypsy band, I tend to trust my instinct with stuff, but in this case it was wrong. I really fucking hate it now, it goes on and on and just screams fake.

Just to add: if anyone wants it, pm me with an address and I'll post it to you.

I don't understand this - it is what it is. It makes no claims to be something it isn't.

Not what I was expecting, that's all :)

i tried to see beirut along with hawk and hacksaw back in nov at luminaire but the zach the beirut guy cancelled due to nervous exhasustion..:(
guess he was waiting to come back into a bigger venue when his nerves recovered and could take it :p
lucky i had free tickets then:p
i do like hack and a hacksaw and enjoyed their performance muchly that time and im a big fan of jeremys previous band babilcon as well(they sounded like soft machine if anyone cares)

i do enjoy beirut to an extent..i dont think its great by any means but its quite good for an indie band, im sure he's a very good musician too..i agree with reno that yes it IS watered down, but it is a different sort of mood to balkan orkestars, which are upbeat and FRANTIC..zachs music is more wistful in tone..there is a balkan influence thats all, these balkan bands are largely wedding celebration type acts and his music is introspective..im not sayin one is better than the other they are just VERY different..

black ox orkestar is a hybrid sort of thing,a bit more klezmer oriented at times but quite dark, more depth than beirut IMVHO..but hey give the kid a break he's only 20(and yeah im tryin too as well..)

they were shambolic but fantastic yesterday - zach was clearly terrified and a bit wankered, but there's something about those brass arrangements that brings a lump to my throat

It was pissing it down when I left work - so I decided I couldn't be arsed cycling down to the south bank and headed home.....

However, by the time I had got back to Hackney the sun was shining and it was a glorious evening.

Curses!

gutted i didnt see this thread til i got home at 8pm-ish last night..
glad it was good for the people who heard about it tho:)
