I need a new phone and I know nothing

Get a 3 skypephone S2

Cheap, but has features that many other expensive handsets don't even have.

Great internet browsing with cheap unlimited tarriffs (£5/month payg)

Plus free calls to other skype users across the world

How about something like this?

Whilst most new phones can use the net, I find to make anywhere near usable you need a large screen and qwerty keyboard.

My advice:

Avoid the high street shops, other than to have a look at handsets in real life. They are always more expensive than what you'll find online.

Buy direct from the networks' websites instead.

Ignore anyone telling you that 3 is no good - the coverage used to be a bit dodgy but it's fine now. Customer service is a bit crap but the same applies to all networks as far as I can see. They generally have the best value deals

Don't bother with "cashback" deals and the like; they are generally more hassle than they are worth.

Have a look on ebay for handsets if you want to buy separate from the contract/sim.

Consider the Nokia N73 secondhand if you are happy buying secondhand.

That's only because of your 'upper middle class attitudes*' and funny beadle fingers.

Big thumbs up for the N82 here. Great pics, sat-nav, mp3 player, good video qual and very pretty simple to use.

I got a Nokia 6300 in the end. If anyone cares. Took me fucking ages to get the battery cover off  But it's ok now

don't get a C902, had nothing but problems with mine. Can't get a signal, it locks up all the time. Just an awful phone..... its got a decent camera though

I'd take that one back if I were you Fear. I've had a C902 for months and I've not had one single freeze nor problems with dropped calls really ... and I'm on 3 as well

The only issue I have with the thing is that the keys are a little too small and fiddly. And it's underwhelming in its difference from past SE phones.

It is a great phone but mine suffered from lock up, especially during texting. Also I had moments of silence during a lot of calls. People could hear me but I could not hear them.

Reported the fault and O2 replaced this with the C902 Bond Phone in Titanium silver which has no issues at all and also came with the Quantum of Solace (Xbox 360) game (£39.98 on Amazon) for free.

Pain to return a phone but I now have 2x battery, memory card, charger, headphones, USB cable so am pretty happy :)

Probably the best cheap phone for mostly "phone" duties and some light internet usage as required. As someone else said, download Opera Mini to use as your browser. Google also has a very spiffy Gmail client that's designed to minimise data traffic - it costs me less to send an email than an SMS.
