I need a new PC game

I gave Oblivion another go last night and have decided it's just not for me. Too clunky by far.

I feel a bit like I do about coffee... I wish I liked it 'cos everyone else does and they can't all be wrong :D

I think it's probably just too non-linear for me, having started life as a console RPG fan. The Witcher appeals (sorry to keep comparing them, but it helps explain why I find Oblivion lacking) because although you have a great deal of freedom, there's a very definite story line that's really well told. It's like a detective novel; it might not make sense at first but you know it has a point.

That and I like my games slick and polished. If nothing else, the Aurora engine looks fantastic and it's been heavily modded.

Can anyone recommend any other PC RPGs based on my seemingly fussy tastes?

I hear they are releasing an entire updated version ( a patch and then some!) of the Witcher to address the awful dialogue that got botched during translation from Polish as well as improving performance and fixing some pretty hefty bugs.

Not played it myself though...

Yeah, due out in September. All the reviews mention the bugs, but to be honest I haven't noticed a single one yet. I'm not sure if I'm playing the patched version or not though.

The dialogue's really good already to be honest. Although I'm not sure how far through the game I am. It's quite knowing and sarcastic. Very much a grown up version of RPG speak.

If they get it right, then it could well rank up there with the all-time classics. At present it's regarded as flawed genius, but if they can take the flaws out then I guess it'll be very well received. Shame they didn't get it right first time, because a relaunch is never going to have the same impact.

Is it pretty demanding spec-wise?

Do I have a hope of running it on my Macbook Pro under Bootcamp XP?

2.4Ghz Core 2 duo, 4Gb RAM, NVIDIA 8600GT 256Mb

(yes I know I could check the "official" specs, but they are generally pretty useless at establishing "real world" performance when compared to first hand experience!)

You should be fine, I'd have thought. All the previews went on about it being nearly as resource hungry as Crysis, but this isn't the case.

I'm running it at decent levels on a 2.2Ghz c2d, 2GB ram and an Radeon 3700HD.

Yeah - see, once again it is likely to be the VGA card to let me down!

Still - I will give it a crack.

:)

Hello all. First post. Just got The Witcher this past weekend and I'm running it very well with maxed out graphical options on a MacBook Pro, 2.4ghz with a 256MB GeForce 8600M.

Gotta be worth a go then eh.

I just wish I had a good enough computer to play the game that's supposedly better...

mine only has 1 core. :(

Well, I reckon if you asked everyone is the world, more people would prefer Oblivion..

Besides, you have a 360, so you can sit on the sofa and play games instead of sat up at a desk. You win by default.

The Mages guild tasks are pissing me off a bit now. I think I'll go back to the dark brotherhood.

I think Oblivion and its add ons will keep me busy enough until Spore comes out.

THAT is what I sit in.

God, I wish i didn't have to work.

Have racked up 53 hours on Oblivion now and barely touched the sides I', lost in a world of trolls, scamps, thieves and assasigns.
Loving it too much

I've restarted as a mage... :o

I'm really happy to be a mage. My blunt skill is practically non existant and my block isnt much better.

I do however have some pretty heavy duty staffs and am making some kick ass spells. Just realised why I need alchemy too. Joy of joys :D:cool:

how do you make spells? I can see where to make an item (although I can't figure out how to make it have more than one effect) but I can't see where to make spells....
