Skype is great on my M2000! Better sound than calling someone via GSM! Works bloddy well too (to my suprise!)
Can you make Sype calls through the speakerphone or just the earpiece?

I'm still faffing about this. I much prefer the physical design and look of the Palm Treo and I'd much rather stick with the platform rather than go over to the Dark Side, but the lack of WiFi and Skype is a major pain.

Despite promising that drivers would be available for the Teo 650 last month, there's still nothing on the palmone site... Hmm....

i think i'm headed towards the 650 too..have lived very very happily with the treo 270 for many years

am mac so have to stay palm

and I reckon its the best around at the mo

-so the wifi may become poss on it...thats good

and the web is perfectly feasible on it Ed...I guess not getting too hung up on wifi idea right now would save you a lot of microsoft switching horror too

by the way..switching providers is a lot less hassle than converting from palm to windows equivalent i reckon..its a couple of phone calls and wait a while before switching over...Im headed to Orange from o2..150 quid for treo 650 (joining as a business - just one phone!)

That's not strictly true - there is an application called the missing sync that allows you to sync a Pocket PC with a mac.

I emailed the tech head of PalmOne in the UK about wi-fi and I've heard nothing back - and on the Palm forums most people seem sure that it's never going to happen.

Even more worrying, palmone are now saying that they may start making PocketPC models - there's already been several screen shots of what looks like Treos running Windows...

Sadly, there's the standard caveat of all things shiny, groovy and Far Eastern: "Whether any British network operator will ever offer the P505 is anybody’s guess"

You never know. Someone might decide to import them if they are very decent. I'm gonna hit Hong Kong some time in the near future, if I see one or something that like it I'll post my findings...

Not much good to anybody but I went to a post-grad talk yesterday. Spoke to a Koren chap that was actually selling his T650 for £380, unlocked. Says he's off to Korea soon and needs to raise some cash. He let me have a look at the 650. Nice form factor. Can't really judge the quality of phone calls b/cos he's on a different provider to me. Nice nifty device.

Faced with the prospect of stamping on my crap Ericsson T610 after ti fucked up again, I went out and got the MDA Compact tonight and it's charging up next to me now.
I've managed to track down a Sandisk 256Meg WiFi SD card from ebay and will grab an ordinary 1 gig memory card tomorrow.

Next up is the fiddly task of transferring all my Palm data to the Pocket PC and then I'll have to see what software there is for the platform (I have no clue what's available as I've been a Palm fella since 1998). I've just bought the PC version of Splash ID as it's an excellent prog on the Palm.

Any other recommendations and 'extended evaluation' software gratefully received!

After some many hours of faffing, I managed to get all the files fromPalm Clie PDA over to the MDA Compact (it was first necessary to transfer the Palm files into Outlook, but the copy of Intellisync Lite that shipped with the Sony would only let me transfer forthcoming appointments. A quick shufti to Intellisync's site let me download a time-limited full trial copy of the full app - so I was able to swap all 3,560 appointments over!)

So far so good. One thing: I carefully added the screen protector. It's really shit, isn't it? Does anyone use it?

I've had my Treo 650 for ten days now and apart from the fact that Vodafone is dragging its heels about transferring my number over to Orange I have to say I'm very pleased so far.

According to various places on the web, the Treo 650 can be wifi-enabled with any SD Wifi card that's compatible with the T3, T5 or Zire72 and a hacked set of drivers you can find and download by googling "Treo 650 wifi".

Too late for editor, I know, but there may be others.

Nah. Won't work.

There's a seriously botched hack by Shadowmite available that can just about manage a wi-fi connection of sorts, but it is not a remotely practical solution.

And there is - apparently - no prospect of Skype appearing on the horizon for the Palm platform anytime soon either.

It's a shame. The Treo is a lovely phone, but I got the XDA for nearly a quarter of the price of the cheapest Treo offer and the wi fi card's in the post and Skype's already installed....

hmm I am starting to think that wi-fi and skype are futher up the top of my list...just realised that of course I have a wi-fi network at home so could be doing webstuff for free..and free skype calls too

hmph so the bottom line is - there is currently NO smartphone powered by Palm that can do wi-fi and skype? That's crap that is

as a Mac user my options are a bit limited then..anyone else in the same boat got any ideas?
