I just listened to 'closer' by Joy Divison....

A lot of credit must be given to hannetts production - really good chapter on joy division in depth in simon reynolds' excellent history of post punk 'rip it up and start again'...nice quote from hannett....'hash....is good for the ears'. For techy nerds who can allow reynolds some poetic licence its fascinating e.g. his application of a micro-second delay to the drums which isnt audible but creates a sense of enclosed space 'a vaulted sound, like music that was recorded in a mausoleum'

Indeed, wasn't hannett regarded by some as being the unofficial fifth member of the group?

Sort of.

Depending on who tells the story he was either, as you say, the "unofficial fifth member", or (as I've seen claimed by various other 3rd parties) "that interfering bastard who dubs synths and effects onto the masters while the band are asleep". :)

Got to agree with Wide Eyed Angel, "24hrs" is a fucking storming track, my personal favourite from that album. I remember listening to Peel, when he announced Ian's death...god is that twenty six years....that was the same year Malcolm Owen from the Ruts OD'd , Peel dropped that one on me as well as i remember..i was 17,just left school.. seems so long ago.
I guess they were both 'In a Rut' and they certainly got out of it.

R.I.P.

:D

I guess that explains the rather different sounds between the two studio albums and some of the other stuff...

On a different note, I have just realised that I have made one of those "Excuse me while I kiss this guy" type listening errors over one of their lines. In the song "A Means to an End", where it says "Set free too", all these years I thought he was saying "Jeffrey too"...:o :D

because of this thread, i listened to closer, and unknown pleasures last night. Closer is (I'll see it a again) a pretty flawless albumn, but I'd forgotten just how good Unknown pleasures is - Disorder and New Dan Fades are both fabby tracks
