Good onya. i have worked in the public libraries since 1995 (including a 5 year career break in amsterdam - wooo-hooooo!) and i love the work more and more these days...not a librarian yet but getting there!

and one does need a diploma in library science on top of your degree to be a qualified librarian..apparently Casanova was a librarian :D

are you doing your diploma now then? That's good. :) I had to keep an eye on this dodgy bloke who had set up camp and was nonchalantly flicking through newpapers and books in the children's section on my first day. :o

It's near xmas now so it was pretty quiet for my first day so i got to flick through pretty much every book, mags and dvd's i touched which was ace. Ive got my eye on loads of stuff! :)

ooh, well done you!! I've recently registered with an agency specialising in library type jobs and got some good advice from them about librarianship qualifications all sorts... the agency were quite inspiring (for once  )

They've also lined me up for an interview tomorrow for another library assistant job (as the one i have atm is only part-time so want to add to my hours) with an academic institution south of the river. :) Slightly nervous so wish me luck.

I work in a public library. Its very demanding. All the library staff are odd, they are all on anti depressants.I was told I would end up hating the pblic-no I thought, but alas I am. When I hear those words"can I book a computer"I want to be sick.Everyone comes in to use the internet-no one gets books!!!!Sorry, but its hard work.

aww, sorry to hear about that side of things. Have to say though, i really like the people I work with...everyone is quite quirky, upbeat, intelligent, into literature, art and we genuinely have a laugh.

Know what you mean about internet bookings though - most of the public's use of our library is for net access, but still a lot of people come in for books and dvd rental and enjoy talking about random things with the old biddies. (you can tell ive still got the n00bie enthusiam)

Find out if i get the college library assistant post tomoz. fingers crossed

Hi
Sorry if I sounded fed up!I think working in a university library is very different to working in a public one.I do have some good moments!I am getting in homeless teenagers now-who do behave-which is good but we also have to have a ban on some under 16s who are right pains in the ar-e.I do not like banning kids but what to do when they bother the other people in the library.
Let me know how you did.

well, unfortunately, I didnt get the job i interviewed for... want to stick to Library work but they are quite thin on the ground at the moment... so im back to square one and applying for loads of different things at the moment to supplement my income. Man I hate job-hunting!

Keep at it - some uni libraries advertise in the summertime for the fortcoming academic year, so hang in there to get experience.

Tis the only job I've ever had that I would go back to if I could. I still miss it.

yeah defo keep trying. we always get loads of new staff in at summer . and oftentime some of 'em choose to stay on longer..sometimes even getting a permanent job out of it! Good luck.:)
