I have so much red cabbage and swede that it makes me want to cry

I've just remembered that the casseroled red cabbage is a mutation of a vegetarian red cabbage stew I used to cook, which was basically red cabbage in tomato sauce (you know, fry an onion, add a tin of tomatoes etc, then add the cabbage) with TVP or those little veggie smoked sausages, flavoured with a lot of stock cube (Marigold powder and/or Kallo French Onion cubes), Worcester sauce, thyme etc. For some reason red cabbage really soaks up flavourings.

yes yes yes. in actual fact. I call them turnips, or neeps too. But, I was trying to avoid that particular thread yet still make it clear which vegetable I was talking about :D I'm sure we've already had one, or maybe even two turnip vs swede threads this winter. they tend to start about Hallowe'en!

and then heat up with the looming Burns' Night...

I've done pretty valiantly so far. Used another half cabbage in stir fry for tea, and have made root veg and barley soup for lunch today which used a fair whack of the neeps. Thanks for all the ideas! They'll come in handy over the next week! :)

Worcester sauce isn't vegetarian! (you can get a veggie version from places like Brixton Wholefoods though)

Chinese cabbage is not the same as red cabbage is it?

:(

2 and a half of each...

what the hell am I going to do with it all!

Any ideas?

I'm already going to make coleslaw....

What!!!! I always have about 2 cabbages and swedes in my fridge.

I eat shit loads of cabbage. Raw grated is nice, or grate and chop thinly for a stir fry.

I quite often chop the lot up in a mixer and mix it up in a curry etc.

Or you could do a stew or pot roast.

We had a work experience kid once, ordered jacket potato and chips in the canteen. We took the piss so much he cried and we were banned from having work experience kids after that... result! :)

No joke, that's made me really, really sad.

All I can think about is that poor awkward little lamb. He's all scared and nervous, going off to do work experience with the big boys. He's dressed up all smart, combed his hair, and is learning how to be a grown up. He doesn't know what the future holds and it's frightening. He's all alone now, none of his friends are there and he's too big to admit he wants his mum. He takes a big breath and soldiers on. It's lunch time and he can't decide. He deserves a treat and fuck it, he's more of an adult now than he was yesterday, so why not make an odd lunch decision? He's still growing anyway, he needs carbs. It's not like anyone's cruel enough to rib him for it, that's not what adults do, is it?

:(

i have just learnt that if you are seaerching for images of swede at work with google, you might want your safe search on.

We used to play a game at work where we would type in a food item to google images and guess how many pages you would get though before it turned to porn. Always surprisingly low.

As for the cabbages and swede. Jesus what an amateur I always have at least two cabbages in my fridge (at the very least) and one or two swede (and a million carrots).

Chop them all up and steam them. Pop them all in the oven, do anything.

Cabbages are amazing.
