I have smashed up my iPod with a hammer

Poor navigation and an ugly interface put me off the iRiver, although I have heard good things about them otherwise

The new H10 is much better than the earlier ones, and has less bugs as well.

My wife and I bought one each in NYC last year. I've never had any trouble (touch wood) but my wifes went bad.

When she took it in to the Apple Store here in London they replaced it straight away without a prob.

Oh and they are the best and nicest looking player by a looong way. Everything else is a poor substitute imv

Would never have bought an I-Pod as think they are over priced, but got a Nano for xmas and its a sweet piece of kit. I had a go on a Creative one today and the interface did not seem quite so slick. Do wish they would sort it out though so you don't have to use i-tunes.

Hey, I said the service was slick, not necessarily the cost.

To be honest though, I wouldn't expect any manufacturer to do cheap repairs once something goes out of warranty. There may be few exceptions to the rule, but I've never been lucky.
:(

I actually tried to get my first (out of warranty) ipod repaired through a variety of people, including the well regarded ipodrepairs website. They still tried to charge me over £230 for a hard disk replacement as well, meaning it would have been as cheap to buy a new one.

I reckon the excuse used to be that those small hds used to be reallly expensive, although if you can source one yourself for cheaper, it's not meant to be impossibly difficult to repair yourself
For small, highly complex devices like HD players you're always going to get charged a lot no matter who does it or who makes it. The fact that they have so many components squeezed into one tiny box makes them tricky to deal with, and parts are pricey I'm told. Even getting the screen repaired can set you back a lot.

It's really not worth people's while spending that long repairing something tiny unless you're going to pay them the equivalent of what they'd earn fixing a laptop, say, in that time, and that's easier to do as well.

And very cathartic it was too

So after throwing it on the floor in disgust on Saturday afternoon, the iPod developed a nasty crackling sound, which necessitated my smashing it up with a hammer in a fit of glee :o

My Pod stopped working in the middle of a very boring train journey back to London today, even though the battery claimed to be half-charged.

Do you have any pics of you smashing it up?

This could become the new porn craze. :D

I bought an ipod. I had it for 2 days and returned it. I used the money to buy another mp3 player (one that could store some more songs than the previous one I owned). It's a Yepp.

Ipod's suck.

For me, the problem is the reverse, I don't think they suck at all - they're great - until they are older than a year and they break, that is. Grrrr....

Ok, I've ordered an iRiver – I don't think I can take the sound of listening to other people's music on the bus through their bud headphones much longer

This is all very heart warming as I have just bought my daughter a Creative Zen Nano plus for her 15th birthday - being the techy geek she is, this is bound to go down well with her :)

Here's a pic of Skim's smashed iPod:
