I like it! the final last year was amazing, can't see it reaching that sort of tension and drama, probably a federer win, but Murray may have a say in it, and I'd love it if he won, love it

The point I'm trying to make it if you like something it's not on enough & if you don't like it it's on too much.

F1
World Cup
Euro Champs
Snooker
Bloody golf
Darts

Both arguments can be used for each one.

I'm not suggesting saturation coverage of just those sports that I particularly like and enjoy watching, but a more balanced level of coverage so that as many sports as possible get a decent opportunity to be seen and enjoyed.

Of the options you list above, I watch F1 sometimes and don't bother wih football, snooker, golf and darts. I do find it really annoying, though, that I often find myself tuning in to watch a particular programme (as in regular viewing I don't like to miss) only to find that it's been either bumped into the wee small hours of the morning or has disappeared from the schedules entirely.

Used to watch it a lot, Connors, McEnroe, Becker et al.

Miloslav Mečíř was me favourite.

Fell in love with Chris Evert for a fortnight once.

I'll watch bits of it deffo.

Tough titties if you don't like it. Turn off the telly and go do something else. It's only telly.

Of course I do do that, but it just narks me a bit, that's all.

That said, internet TV usually gives me my fix of the sports and programmes that actually interest me, and I doubt very much that I'm alone in being annoyed by having those things I do enjoy watching disappear mid-series for stuff that, to be completely honest, leaves me cold.

I just hate the way that everyone seems to assume that everyone is interested and watching Wimbledon avidly. I have just about zero interest in any sport so why would I suddenly develop an interest in tennis for 2 weeks of the year?

I hate Wimbledon. I hate the hype around Wimbledon. I hate the jingoism surrounding the latest Brit to get past the first couple of rounds. I hate the whole damn home counties strawberries and cream whilst watching some working class oik performing schtick.

However I love tennis. Especially the REAL game. Doubles. I used to play quite seriously, even once took a couple of games off a Davis Cup player (for Denmark, so don't be too impressed). Unfortunately since my back went I've not been able to play, so I mostly can't bear watching.

So I hate Wimbledon.

To be fair, quite a few women like Wimbledon and pretty much nothing else sports-wise.

It doesn't bother me. I've only ever watched one final - McEnroe / Borg (I think) and thought that was pretty exciting at the time. Doesn't really interest me any more, though.

I think that's what winds me up about it. It's bullshit. They don't like tennis, they just like the event that is "Wimbledon" because they think it has some sort of cache. These are the tits that hang out on "Henman Hill". They should be hung IMO

Not really. My sister would fall into the category of 'likes watching Wimbledon but not any other sporting event'. She's not a tit.

It's entertainment, not a moral crusade. Why be so purist about it so long as people are having fun and not damaging the spirit of the event or anyone else's enjoyment?

Then I would guess, correct me if I'm wrong, that we share a common annoyance with the regular programming that we actually do want to watch being booted off the schedules in favour of something that leaves us both cold.

I'm a fan of some sports, and many of them don't get decent coverage, if any and I'd like to see them get more coverage. But it's probably worse for people who simply aren't interested in sports at all, having to put up with the stuff they do want to watch disappearing from the schedules for the duration.

People are talking here as if loads of quality televisopn gets booted into touch

:)

Lots of stuff that I happen to really enjoy watching often does, though.

It's particularly irritating when it's a series I'm watching as well, that suddenly disappears from the schedules right in the middle of it, and then only re-surfaces a couple of weeks or a month or so later, by which time I've probably forgotten much of what I've seen and then spend time trying to figure it all out again.

If it annoys me that some sporting events get far too much coverage, while many sports that I like and enjoy get little or none, it must be even more irritating for people who have no interest in any sport at all to find that their regular viewing has simply vanished into the ether in favour of something that they have absolutely no interest in at all.

I hate it. I hate tennis.

The game itself is tedious and the players have all the personality of a postage stamp. I hate Henman Hill, I hate Richard Murray, I hate leagions of hot housed east european players.

I hate the Daily Express reading culture of tennis and wimbledon. I hate Sue Barker. I hate Cliff Richard.

I hate it.
more to the point, i also hate wimbledon.

I like Wimbledon. Advert-free TV covering an advert-free tennis event. Lovely.

:D

advert-free tennis event? Are you sure?

Well the courts aren't surrounded by adverts. That's a good thing.

As I said before, it would be even better if it were still amateur.

All sports should be amateur.

All sports should be amateur.

It'd be good to revive the sporting culture which valued taking part (and of course sportsmanship) above the desire to win consistently. However, I can see very little wrong in practice with paying people to participate so long as all parties are happy to do so.

I like tenis, i like wimbeldon.

I don't watch enough tennis as i never remember whats on when and its rarely advertised.

Tennis is ameteur!(well virtually) they don't get paid to play they only get paid by winning and the odd grant here and there.

Not true. If you play in a professional tournament you get paid.

This year's first round losers at Wimbledon will get £10,750 each. It goes up from there for each round:

On top of that, most players have various forms of sponsorship both in cash and benefits in kind.

They're not salaried, granted. But amateur, even virtually? I think the Professional Tennis Players Association might disagree.

I think amateur sports are more enjoyable for everyone. Played for the glory. Watched to provide the glory. Healthier all round.

oh yeah theres a lot of money in it.

But its not like football or rugby or basketball or whatever where you get paid a set wage every week(plus perforemnce related bonuses normally) regardless of what you do on the field of play.

You only get paid dependent on your results. That to me makes it ametuer.

Sponsorship is a compltly sepearte arrangement.

dave

what and you don't think that pro players do? just beacuse they get paid?

thats silly. esepcially when you apply it to higher paid stars like footballers/f1 drivers and such.

Ronaldo can afford to retire at 23, the reason he will continue to play for another 10 years is beacuse he loves what he does.

More so then ameteurs to be honest, i've known people who play golf purely as a way to advance thier carears or even get away from the missus for an afternoon.
