I Hate Macs

FridgeMagnet said:
Sure, I expect there are some people who do just go out and say "I want the prettiest computer, don't care what it does", though I don't know any. No way are they the majority of Mac purchasers though. Just because something looks nice and people appreciate it looking nice doesn't mean that they bought it just because it looks nice.

I'd say the number one reason IME for people buying Macs is that they've had some sort of catastrophic virus attack or hardware fault or Windows error on a machine that is getting a bit old anyway. They've heard people talking about Macs and how they're reliable and don't get viruses, they ask around, people answer their questions about compatibility, they think it over, then they go out and buy one. "You know, this beige PC doesn't match my white leather sofa" is not one I've heard.
It's like listening to a Scientologist.

I am not a pinko or a commie.

(I think that was what you are trying to say)

in my experience, it's been a big influence on people I know who have bought Apple stuff.

I don't doubt it's an influence, otherwise Apple wouldn't spend any money on their industrial design (then again, neither would Sony or any other computer manufacturer).

'Just because they look nice', however? I doubt seriously it's the only factor in most Mac purchases though. Icing on the cake, I'd suggest.

Informal survey of questions from switchers' reasons in the Mac Forum at dpreview.com. The most recent five threads I could find asking about moving to Macs:

PC BSOD annoyance

Performance/virus concerns

Mac-using wife's persuasion

Frustration with Dell/Windows troubleshooting

Frustration with Windows troubleshooting

These are real people asking real questions, not Apple's marketing dept.

Nobody mentioned how they look as a factor in their choice to switch, except in deciding between an iMac or a Mac Pro (and that's relly a practical concern to keep the wife happy with a minimum number of leads looking untidy).

Garf's daily meltdown :D

FWIW I agree with TP.. people buy them because they're supposedly cool. Of the three mac owners I know, they all bought them because they're the stylish choice.

FM: I think what you don't seem to be getting is that people don't buy Macs because they look good, they CHOOSE macs because they look good.

well what idiot is going to own up to buying a mac because they wanna look cool? they are blatantly gonna say 'oh I got it for this or that feature' which makes them sound cooler because it shows some sort of knowledge about their fancy lookin bit of kit.

See, everybody says that people buy Macs just because they look nice, but I've yet to meet a single person for whom this is the case.

Indeed and if people did why aren't Macs the dominant platform?

I said that Apple's cool design (backed by their advertising) had been a big influence on people I know who have bought Apple stuff. And that's true.

But then they're ordinary consumers who are unlikely to read specialist websites like dpreview.

one thing though, the whole 'only one button' thing? im using apple's current 'mighty mouse', its been out for nearly two years now, and features a right and left click under its shell, plus two side buttons, and 360 degrees scroll ball, which by my reckoning is at least as many as the average PC mouse. that was all really, let the endless PC v MAC debate (pt94) continue...

They're badly made though, they've let me down there - I'm on my 3rd, 3 other people who work here are on their second and I think my 3rd one is about to stop scrolling up again. And no screws to open the fucker up and clean it.

It definitely draws people in to look at the things in the first place, but that's what advertising is designed to do.

Why not get a different type of mouse...?

Yeah, the scroll ball is a poor design. It's always getting gummed up and you can't clean it. I can't remember having used the sideways scroll either, except once or twice when I thought "well I've got a scroll ball, I might as well see if I can use it".

I've only got one because it came with the iMac to be honest.

I always wonder what would happen if Macs had viruses/malware... Would people still use them...? I would guess the market share would be much less. In the 1990's (until Windows 95) Macs had a large usability advantage over Windows 3.1...

My pro mouse is bogging:o

True though. XP sucks dogs arse compared with OS X, a truly multitasking and protected OS. Graphically XP's barely a step up from Windows 3.

And Vista will need an extremely powerful computer and graphics card to run decently and will need hacking to be even remotely useful for what I use my PC for. But I live in hope.

Yes my Bf ditched his and now uses a 2 button pc mose as well, although at first he was loathed to break up the design......bloody graphic designers:rolleyes:

Funnily enough the best mouse I've ever used with a Mac has been a Microsoft one. MS do make good mice, mind.

You were answering Fridge's questioning whether it was the only factor in purchasing decisions. Fridge's set-up might be a bit of a straw man argument if taken literally, of course.

All I can say is that IME, people I know who have bought Macs within the last few years have tended to be disillusioned Windows users looking for an alternative. My dad bought a PowerBook after struggling with a Windows computer for several years.

YMMV.

On the other hand, my (previously Mac-using) mum bought herself a Sony desktop because it looked nicer than an iMac. :)

That's Digital Photography Review.

I changed my mouse because it was easier to use than the one button mouse, purely because of the scroll wheel and I was used to it, but seriously come on, you are going to criticise the whole machine because of one pikey little problem with a mouse?

I use a pen mostly TBH and getting something out of the IT dept here is liking getting free water out of nightclub barman.

So... You use a pen-mouse...? If you want to use something better then do so... You do know that using a mouse can cause rsi...? Better to get a trackball...
