the thing is, the volume in which i download tunes etc, i don't always have time to sort the tags out. And i have 1000s from years ago that are in a mess. But if I do it all by filename, it doesn't matter.

Tag and Rename has a "Get tag from filename" mode

(one of the few bits of software I've gone out and upgraded to the full version)

Ah, but you see I rip my own CDs and they're all tagged up by iTunes automatically when I do that (apart from music by bands I've actually been in myself :)) so I never have that problem.

Why...? Its a file structure. It should not be concerned with music... Do your wardrobe hangers define the colour of your clothes...?

you've got to give folders and files names. why not use something vaguely meaningful? just don't rely on them for metadata.

I mostly play stuff on random, mostly.

I also use the search function to find a tune, album, or artist. This doesn't mean that having files and folders ordered to my satisfaction is pointless.

Take a peak at OS X with Spotlight, then. As well as Ubuntu with Beagle. Finding stuff is now, very, very easy. As long as you aren't using Windows....

although I think they are still in beta you can install desktop search and media player 11 and they both have that instant narrowing search
