Two credit searches isn't nearly enough to fuck you up - don't worry. If it was 10, then perhaps...
The #1 reason for people being refused because of the credit refernce agency data is that they are not on the voter's roll at that address, nothing to do with credit records per se. Are you on the voter's roll at that address?
Otherwise, as others say, it could be because you don't have enough of a credit history (if you've never had a credit card etc.). If that the case this will come up again and again, so best get one and just use it a little bit and pay it off in full each month.
AFAIR there is a way of disassociating yourself from someone at the same address with awful credit - I can't remember whether they just put a note on your account, or whether it's a special code or something, but once you get your details from Equifax and are actually permitted to speak with a human, ask them about it.
