I can't control my mouse and other weird things

Back on topic, have you tried removing the USB-PS2 adapter and trying the mouse in a USB (Flat-rectangular port) on your laptop (plug in with laptop off, then switch on).

Also you should know that you really shouldn't hot-plug PS2 devices (ie. plug/unplug them when the laptop is switched on) as you may damage the motherboard/PS2 port. I've done it myself by accident/lack of patience and haven't had a problem *yet*, but it could be what's causing your problems.

Try your mouse in a USB port or borrow another USB mouse and try that.

I unplugged it so I could try another mouse (a PS2 corded one), but that one started bouncing all over the place as well

Last night was probably first time I've taken mouse out so it's not like I've been fiddling around with it

Probably daft questions but is the trackpad active and if so have you got it set up with any hotspots on it? If it is, and you've got hotspots then you may be accidentally touching it when you type and launching things you didn't mean to or moving the cursor.

Could you not use the trackpad instead of the mouse?

Also, are you accidentally hitting the nipple mouse between the G, H & B? (can't remember what it's actually called on your Laptop :o) I took the rubber bit off mine when I used it as it annoyed me.

trackpad must be active as that's how I was managing to post last night.

Nipple mouse? :hmm:

Could you try a USB one? Either the one you had originally (with the adapter removed) or a borrowed one.

Nipple mouse? :hmm:

Some laptops used to have a rubber "nipple" in the middle of the keyboard which you teased gently in any direction to move the cursor.

If Minnie's laptop is anything like mine (also running Win2000), it may not have a USB slot hence the adaptor

Yes, only have one USB slot and one PS2 thingy. USB slot is home to USB adaptor which is home to Modem, Printer etc. P thingy houses my round adaptor into which a USB adaptor goes

but I don't think it's the mouse. Surely both of them can't be fucked?

If you uninstall the driver

Then unplug your current mouse and adaptor

Then turn it off

Then turn it back on again

Then plug in new PS2 mouse with no adaptor

You could at least rule out (or pretty much) whether the problem is with the mouse/driver/adaptor or not

Try removing the stuff you use in the single USB port you have (temporarily just to test this), then use the mouse you have (but with the PS2 adapter thingio removed).
Do this with the laptop off, then turn it on and see what happens. Let us know and then we can take it from there.

It'd be good to know what service pack you're running as well (right-click 'My Computer' and click 'Properties', service pack should be shown under the 'General' tab). Win2000 had some issues with USB(2?) that I don't think was properly fixed till SP4.

Minnie ...

do the windows then open up open when you are hands-off the mouse/keyboard?

What extra windows egt opened: is it (eg) you open Control Panel, but 5 instances get opened, or is it that un-requested pages get opened? what are those pages/windows?

does all the random pg-up/pg-down/windows/mouse bump happen if you cut all network access down?

are you all up to date with _reputable & good_ malware/firewall/virus bits? (if not, sophos, zonealarm, and windows defender will see you right for free THIS is not a debate about the merits of those pieces, before we start a techie pissing competition)?

have you disabled the touchpad and your nipples in the device manager?

i'm guessing that your problem is an annoyance (poss. mouse driver, as discussed), or a risk (rogue process). an annoyance is just that, but a rogue process is less fun ... does you home network look like some close relation of the thing below?

I was trying to do that last night, but hundreds of pages were opening and I couldn't shut them and as fast as I shut them more appeared.

Will see how it's behaving tonight. b/f's brother is coming over on Thursday so he can fix it before I throw it out the window

I can sometimes just be passing over something on my way to try to open something else with mouse and things I'm passing are opening. I don't know what's making it scroll or what's making all my typing disappear though.

Don't know about disabled the touchpad but I'm pretty certain when I bought this mouse, I looked into disabled it and couldn't (not 100% sure of that though).

Close relationship of what thing below?

ah right, picture's appeared.

I have Nod32 and Malwarebytes. That's about it as far as I know

......probably yeah Hi_Arsl is probably right probably. So don't bother doing anything that would probably be the right course of action probably.

If I were you Minnie I'd probably just start posting these sort of enquiries in General again then probably you'd get more help probably and more luck probably.

Minnie, have you tried preformatting all your systems and redowngrading your interfaces to Windows 95?

I think maybe mousey is fixed. I've managed to type two posts without it going skewith.

Maybe the trick was to unplug the USB cable as well as the mouse.

Thank you all.

See you soon with my next problem ;):D

There should be a Fn shortcut to disable/enable the trackpad. Mine's Fn+F7. The long way is to go through Control Panel > Mouse, and it should be in the mouse configuration somewhere - can't remember where offhand.

Um.. Won't help though. Having the same problem. Tried. Failed.

Don't you start winding me up with Fn buttons
