I can't control my mouse and other weird things

remove adaptor & mouse...then uninstall the PS/2 driver via Device Manager & reboot it...then reintroduce it.

what happens?

lulz to see you've got your DVD writer working.

did that but then I can't seem to log off so have to manually switch off, but then when I log back on again, hundreds of windows open

I can't get DVD writer working as I don't have enough RAM. b/f's brother has said it's too expensive so he's bringing over something else that might work

you also need to run ccleaner to clean out the shit you left behind the last time you abortively attempted to install AVG...and stop installing random Toolbars you dunt use...infact get rid of them. Then run ccleaner again to get rid of them completely.

Yeah, all them no files clogging things up

ello bosky :):)

I haven't installed any Toolbars. I wouldn't know what to do with them if I did :o:confused:

If they appear on the list they are running, they may say 0 processing being used, but it means they are running in memory.

I just wondered how many you had.

To give you a comparison, I have 20 and that includes Firefox and my software Firewall.

this is a problem I encounter a lot when asked ot fix friends and families PC/Laptops. you get there, look on Taskmanager and they got 40 different things running.

The first thing I do is turn all that crap off, because it is more then likely one of htem causing the problem, once they are out of the way, if the problem persists, then you can move on, but until you turn anything that isn't neccessary off, you will struggle to narrow down what the problem is.

WTF :D

I just shut down Explorer. Go ahead and try it.

Did your PC crash? Then it wasn't critical was it?

Though saying that, you should be told how to run Explorer again after you close it.

In taskmanager..

File > New Task (Run)

Type in Explorer.exe

Explorer comes back.

Then you should also uninstall all the stuff you loaded on the machine related to that drive.

Back to Windows opening.

Fine...you manually turned off. You went thru Check Disk?... and loads of windows appeared.

Is the mouse problem solved?

If so...shut all the windows.

Reboot the computer again...what happens?

Yeah that is a lot more then you need.

It has been awhile since I used 2k, so I can't honestly say exactly what you need.

I would suggest you follow my advice from earlier and turn off things in Services and Start Up, then restart.

Follow the instructions, don't untick things with Microsoft as the manufacturer while in services, but just untick everything in start up.

Let us know how many processes you have running after you done this, it should be down in the low 20s.

no, didn't do chkdsk

Mouse problem not solved

Will uninstall the DVD writer

Going bed. Brain frazzled :o

You didn't actually do it did you?!

Yes, I am a true pioneer of stupidity :)
It did give me a 45 second warning but that wasn't quite enough to save everything. And to be fair to Dravinian there are some things it really won't let you shut down (lsass.exe, csrss.exe, smss.exe etc.)

I s'pose it won't let you shut down anything that will stop the system working altogether, but it will let you shut down some system processes and if you do that at an unfortunate moment sometimes you can lose functionality of a system component (according to microsoft, not going to test it myself)

Back on topic, have you tried removing the USB-PS2 adapter and trying the mouse in a USB (Flat-rectangular port) on your laptop (plug in with laptop off, then switch on).

Also you should know that you really shouldn't hot-plug PS2 devices (ie. plug/unplug them when the laptop is switched on) as you may damage the motherboard/PS2 port. I've done it myself by accident/lack of patience and haven't had a problem *yet*, but it could be what's causing your problems.

Try your mouse in a USB port or borrow another USB mouse and try that.

win 2k has a lot of problems with drivers, i've had a microsoft wireless mouse that i just couldn't get it to work... so there could be a conflict between win2k and the mouse's driver... anyway this is going to be very difficult to figure out if you know next to nothing about your pc and you are trying to fix it on a forum

Probably daft questions but is the trackpad active and if so have you got it set up with any hotspots on it? If it is, and you've got hotspots then you may be accidentally touching it when you type and launching things you didn't mean to or moving the cursor.

Could you not use the trackpad instead of the mouse?

Also, are you accidentally hitting the nipple mouse between the G, H & B? (can't remember what it's actually called on your Laptop :o) I took the rubber bit off mine when I used it as it annoyed me.

It is one of those annoying things about PCs, so bloody much to them and some of the knowledge is just there, it isn't a part of hte process when you think about stuff, closing svchost is just a nono, it isn't something you think about...assumed knowledge.

Minnie, did you try what I said about Services and Start Up through the Run and msconfig command?

If you can eliminate everything that is running in the background as a source of the problem it only leaves a very few options left.

As I said, follow the instructions, don't turn off Microsoft Manufacturer stuff but don't worry about start up so much. At least if you do this and see if the problem persists you will have pretty much narrowed it down to a hardware problem.
