because they politicize/publicise personal lifestyle choices. there's a puritanism loaded into it which implies that the private gratification from the lifestyle choice is insufficient to justify it hence the necessity that it be justified in public/political terms.

But I have to disagree. I think that on the contrary, it's because hippies failed to be sufficiently political, that it seems to have degenerated into a lifestyle choice. Anyway, see you..- off to bed.
