I am the subject of a bidding war!

Go for the money, put it in a pot and then quit when it's all too much and do something with the money you saved (buy a house. travel. i dunno :))

You could also use the extra money to put contracts out on your enemies...
:D

Think back to why you applied for this particular job...

You must have been attracted to the position on some level, otherwise you wouldn't have applied, surely? So what's different now?

I applied cos the role demanded language skills and would offer a higher salary. I also applied to see if my employer will gave me a raise and cos I wanna leave my job (tho not necessarily work in the City!)

i think you are being exploited somewhat at the moment, even with more money you'll be working just as hard and essentially still unappreciated.

go for the headhunter job.. if it's dire you can headhunt yourself out of there :)

(I have known headhunters who have done that )

For what it's worth I'd stick with the job you like, see if you can get a bit more money but stick with for the time being. This is just personal opinion but the idea of working in the City, day in, day out makes my skin crawl. Congratulations either way that you're so wanted :D

Play the long game. Go for the job that will hopefully lead you where you want to be going in your career.

I just had a meeting with two senior partners from the company. They came out all guns blazing and said "We really want you here", "You'd make a great addition to the team" and then they had the temerity to tell me my career would benfit from working with them as I'd learn new skills n can always swtich back to being a financial journo.

I do feel flattered I do! :)

I told my current employer I wanted to leave n they gave me a whopping raise . . .

So why wern't they paying that before? (rhetorical question obviously)

I then told the City peeps I didn't want to work for them...
They've just called back with a ridiculous offer.

Then take it, they clearly want you.

AAh! I'd forgotten that, if I knew.

They want your contact book, and they want you while people feel flattered/intrigued when you call.

But if you try to switch back, and it's known what you've been doing, how will people react when you call?

Sounds like a one-way street to me.

^^^ What he says, and if you work in the city you will end up doing loads of drugs, not good :D well I did anyway ..

But if you have decided to move you should, your obvously not that happy where you at the moment even if this new offer of a job is not the right one

Companys will only pay the bare minimum they need to, to keep you there. They will only give you more if you threaten to leave and they still need you. In my experience, every year when it comes to pay reviews you get the "oh, we havent got any money, we cant afford to give you more than 100quid rise". And yet, if anyone then hands their notice in, the company immediately mysteriously finds 2->5k which they can give the person as a rise to keep them there.
