I am the muthafuckin King of book finding

Someone I know once picked up a first edition copy of the first John Le Carre book, complete with its dusjacket, for 50p from a charity shop.

He sold it a few days later for £4,500.

This was a few years ago before abebooks.com became well known. Most charity shops do check online now to see if they happen to have a valuable item in their hands before the put it for sale.

ETA: that poses a moral question in itself. He knew the book was worth a lot (though probably not four figures) when he spotted it. Should have he alerted the charity shop instead?

I think that's worth a thread in General...
 
If anyone has a copy of Green's 'A Groatsworth of Wit (Bought with a Million of Repentance)' I would be interested........
 
I could find you the Doctor Who comic strip if you like instead (funny that that's the first result in google rather than the real thing:D)

There's a weird border between 'second hand' and 'old' books. I'm mildly fastidious about some second hand books and library books - y'know, the odd stain, bogie, pube etc. Somehow though when all that crud develops into mould and part of the cover breaks off, it officially becomes characterful and antiquarian.

Similarly, an inscription from someone on the occassion of their son's Confirmation in 1927 seems to carry more weight than 2007 infant crayon scawl on the flyleaf...
 
I am dead lucky, I have one of the biggest second hand book shops in the world just up the road from me. I spend hours there every month or two:

where's that? Toon?

Used to be a massive one at Barnard Castle which closed a few years ago.
